  1. Remember to recycle aluminum cans. One recycled aluminum can saves enough energy to run a 100-watt light bulb for almost a whole day. And, recycling a glass bottle saves enough energy to run the television for three hours.

  2. Did you know that if every car carried just one more passenger on its daily commute, we could save 32 million gallons of gasoline each day? Try to carpool to the game, work, and other places.

  3. You can save nearly $100 a year in energy costs by shutting off electronic devices such as your computer, monitor, and printer when you aren’t using them. Make sure you unplug those chargers too!

  4. We could save 1 million trees if every household replaced just one pack of regular napkins with 100 percent recycled napkins. Make sure you only take only one napkin at the concession stand, and avoid using a bag unless you really need one.

  5. The cheapest and most energy-efficient light and heat source is right outside your window! Keep those window shades open to let the sun in for light. On cold days it can even raise the room temperature several degrees.

  6. Showers account for 15 percent of the water used in your home, so try and take shorter showers. Also, you can save 2 gallons of water for every minute in the shower by installing a low-flow showerhead.

  7. A compact fluorescent light bulb keeps half a ton of carbon dioxide out of the air over its lifetime. It might be a little more expensive than a traditional light bulb, but it lasts ten times longer and each light bulb saves about $30 per year in electricity costs.

  8. Make sure you participate in your local recycling programs. Recycling saves resources, decreases the use of toxic chemicals, cuts energy use, helps curb global warming, stems the flow of water and air pollution, and reduces the need for landfills and incinerators.

Knicks and GDF Reuse, Reduce and Recycle

The Knicks kicked off their efforts for the 2nd Annual NBA Green Week with an event to help spread and promote green efforts in New York City. On Friday March 26, Anthony Bonner and two Knicks City Dancers, joined special guest and Garden of Dreams board member, Matthew Modine and a group of 21 children from Garden of Dreams partner organization, WHEDCo, at their Intervale Green facility.

Intervale Green is the nation’s largest green multi-family affordable housing development for low-income and formerly homeless families. This year, approximately 384 adults and children will be residents of the second affordable South Bronx housing complex, Intervale Green, and an adjacent studio apartment building, the Louis Nine House, for youth aging out of foster care.

Upon arrival, the children were treated to a private pizza party before getting into the green activities. First the children focused on reducing, the children were broken into groups to compete in a hand washing competition to demonstrate how to efficiently wash their hands and reduce water use.
