Richardson holds the franchise record with an amazing 18 triple-doubles. His greatest performance was on March 21, 1981 against Cleveland when he recorded 27 points, 15 assists, and 19 rebounds. He also has the franchise record for most steals in a game (9).
Micheal Ray Richardson sat down with the Knicks to talk about the NBA, his career, and his thoughts on Black History Month.

“Back when I played, a big man could shoot the ball outside. Bob McAdoo was a great outside shooter.”
What was your favorite memory from your playing days in the NBA?
“I have a few great memories. Making the All-star team four times was one. I also led the league in steals and assists three years in a row. Perhaps my greatest memory was one game on Christmas Day when I recorded one of my triple-doubles.”
What do you remember most about New York?
“It’s the greatest place to play basketball. If you can make it in New York, you can make it anywhere.”
Was it harder playing for or against the Knicks?
“Against. New York was where I got my start and it is the best place to play. It will always have a special place in my heart.”
Who was the hardest player you ever had to defend? Defended you?
“Isiah Thomas was the hardest player I had to defend. He was so quick. There wasn’t a player who defended me well. I was ready to play against anybody.”
What does Black History Month mean to you?
“It’s important because it shows where we were then and where we are now. Things are improving day by day.”
Who are some of your heroes?
“Julius Erving (Dr. J), Martin Luther King, and Bob McAdoo.”
What advice would you give to today’s youth?
“Pick and choose the people in your life.”
