SACRAMENTO, CA, March 7, 2011 -- The Sacramento Kings and Intel have teamed up to host the fourth annual “Intel/Kings Engineering Challenge.” The previous three challenges pitted multiple local high schools against each other to use their imaginations to create unique entertainment devices for the Kings mascot Slamson. This year’s challenge tests local high school students from Sacramento School of Engineering & Sciences and tasks them with creating an elaborate T-shirt cannon.
“Intel is all about science and engineering. When we decided to take a new spin on the Intel/Kings Engineering Challenge, we knew we needed to find a great teacher at a great school to make things work,” said Leroy Tripette, External Affairs Manager at Intel Corporation. “We found Drew Kennedy at Sacramento School of Engineering & Sciences.”
Kennedy, News10’s Teacher of the Month for September 2010, is no stranger to the Intel/Kings Engineering Challenge. His team from Sheldon High School in Elk Grove won last year’s Engineering Challenge with its creation of a giant basketball-themed device known as “Bop It.”
For this year’s challenge, Kennedy’s students built a T-shirt device capable of shooting multiple T-shirts at one time. The team was provided with $2,000 courtesy of Intel and given only four months to complete the challenge. On March 7, Drew and his team will unveil their project during halftime of the Kings-Rockets game at Power Balance Pavilion. For their hard work, the students will enjoy a fully-catered suite during the game and a VIP tour of the Intel campus in Folsom.
“The NBA is where amazing happens. On Monday, Mr. Kennedy and his students are going to bring an engineering version of amazing to Power Balance Pavilion,” said Tripette.
