Sacramento Kings Foundation Accepting Nominations for Second Annual Pete Saco Awards

Sacramento, Calif. – Today, the Sacramento Kings and the Kings Foundation open nominations for this year’s second annual Pete Saco Awards to honor local teams, coaches and student-athletes for their undeniable sportsmanship and service. The trio of annual awards are named in recognition of Pete Saco, who retired as Commissioner for the California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) Sac-Joaquin Section. Award winners will be announced and recognized during the Kings vs. Mavericks game on March 27.

The Kings have partnered with Pete Saco to host hundreds of CIF Sac-Joaquin student-athletes, teams and schools at Sleep Train Arena. For, more than 25 years, student-athletes have been able to complete in events that provided them with a platform to gain experience and compete in a professional sports venue.

“We’re proud to recognize local sports teams, coaches and student-athletes and honor them with the Pete Saco Award for the second consecutive year here at Sleep Train Arena,” said Kings President Chris Granger. “Pete defined the value of sportsmanship, hard-work and commitment throughout the region and these deserving recipients are proof that these traits remain practiced and valued.”

Online submissions and nominations for the 2015-16 Pete Saco Awards will be accepted at Kings.com/PeteSaco through March 17 for the following awards:

  • Pete Saco “Community Impact Award” – Team that upheld Saco’s core beliefs regarding sportsmanship, accountability and passion, as well as excelled both on and off the field.
  • Pete Saco “Lifetime Achievement Award” – Coach or administrator who left a positive, inspiring and impactful mark on high school sports.
  • Pete Saco “Scholarship Award” – Student-athlete will receive a $2,500 scholarship for upholding the tenets of Saco’s efforts: athletic performance, community service and academic success.

Under Pete Saco’s leadership, the CIF Sac-Joaquin Section grew from 115 schools to 195 schools and more than 225,000 students. This unprecedented growth also included the expansion of three divisions to seven divisions. Additionally, Saco’s legacy entails numerous scholarships and honorable programs, including the Hall of Fame, the Dick Nelson Community Service Award and the Women in Sports Conference.
