Q & A With Corsley
Taken with the last selection (#58) of the 2002 NBA Draft, Corsley Edwards is on a mission; a mission to make the Kings opening day roster and help Sacramento in whichever way possible during the 2002-03 season.
A 6-9, 275-pound forward, Edwards has the college pedigree to succeed. He was named Honorable Mention All-America by The Associated Press as a senior at Central Connecticut State after playing all four years at CCSU. Edwards averaging 14.1 points, 7.9 rebounds and 1.61 blocks per game, while shooting .509 from the field and .687 from the free throw line, ranking him second in school history in points (1,731) and fifth in rebounds (967).
Earlier this week Corsley sat down with Kings.com to answer your questions. Here's what he had to say:
Hey Corsley,
Congrats on making it into the NBA! I wanted to know, if you could put it in words, what it felt like to hear your name being called on Draft night?
-Vince, Sacramento, CA
Edwards: “It felt like hitting the lottery almost, getting the opportunity to go out and play with the best people in the world. It felt like a lifetime dream that I always wished for came true. I was even more special because I was there.”
Glad to see that you signed Corsely! What do you expect that you will be able to add to the kings when you see playing time next year. You have great numbers coming out of Central Connecticut State with regards to rebounds, blocks and scoring percentages, but what do you feel is your greatest area of impact during the game? Thanks,
-Kary Houston, Elk Grove, CA
Edwards: “Power and strength; banging and bruising. I don’t back down.”
Hey Corsely, what's going on? I go to the University of Connecticut, but came to see you play a few times over at Central. I was wondering how you feel about living so far away from home and if that will affect the way you play on the court? Also, I wanted to add that the Kings are a good team and I definitely think you will shock the league with what you can truly do in the post. Good Luck and Represent CT baby!!! Make teams pay for passing up on you. One Love.
-Andrew Altman, West Hartford, CT
Edwards: “It won’t affect the way I play on the court, because in order to play basketball you have to travel everywhere. I’ll consider Sac as a new home, a new place to play. I’m looking forward to coming out West, I’m kind of looking to get away from the East Coast.”
Congrats on signing a contract. I look forward to watching you play and helping the Kings win a Championship. I was wondering who are you looking forward to playing against in the league or on the Kings team during practice? Thanks for your time and good luck this season.
-Dayn, Sacramento, CA
Edwards: “I’m looking forward to playing with Chris Webber and against Shaquille O’Neal. Shaq is one of my favorite players. Chris Webber is my favorite, but playing against Shaq is something I’ve always wanted to do. He likes to bang and I like to bang, and I’m not one to back down from anyone. It’s a nice goal or task for me to take on.”
Hey Corsley,
Do you have a "nickname"? What number are you going to wear?
-Chris Taylor
Edwards: “My nickname is ‘Big Dawg’ and my number is #34.”
I just want to ask Corsley Edwards who is the person he looks up to for inspiration?
- Devyn Elam, Pleasantville, NJ
Edwards: “My father, Corsley Edwards, Sr. because he’s been there for me. I feel like he’s built me to be the man I am today. He used to play in Germany and has pointed me in the right direction.”
My question is how much playing time do you think you will get in Sacramento and would you think of going to Europe.
-Dave Luft
Edwards: “I don’t expect to come in and start right away, I don’t think Coach Adelman expects that from a rookie. But I think I’m going to stick with the team and try and play for Sacramento as a role player. I’m ready to come in and do whatever he wants.”
I wanna know how are you going to adjust your game to fit the Kings style of basketball, because at CCSU you guys were more of a set up team and there wasnt much of the Fast break game there.
-Dan Nasiadka, New Britain, CT
Edwards: “Coming up through highschool I played with a fast break team, and that’s the style I like. I’m the type of player that does what the team wants. If the Coach wants something done, that’s what I’m going to do.”
Dear Corsley,
With a roster as deep as the Kings', finding minutes will be somewhat difficult. What other ways are you planning on learning the game and fine-tuning your skills?
-Dianne, Suisun, CA
Edwards: “Watching one of the top players in the game; Chris Webber. I’m going to watch him and learn, because I’m a fast learner. I’m fortunate that he’s there and I’ll be able to watch one of the best power forwards in the game and try to improve my game.”
What are you most looking forwarding to about playing with the Sacramento Kings next year? i.e. the fans, the learning experience, the relationships among the players ect.... Good Luck and Welcome.
-Celece, Cameron Park, CA
Edwards: "Winning a championship. That’s what I’m looking forward to.”
