a Day of Volunteerism to Celebrate Cesar Chavez Day
Volunteers to Refurbish the Roberts Family Development Center at
Twin Rivers Housing Complex in Honor of the Legacy of Cesar Chavez

Monday, March 23, 2009 SACRAMENTO, CA ---- Joe and Gavin Maloof will close Maloof Sports & Entertainment offices on Tuesday, March 24, for its sixth annual Day of Volunteerism to celebrate the legacy of Cesar Chavez. Together with presenting partners Health Net, Raley’s & Bel Air and Wells Fargo, Sacramento Kings players, Monarchs personnel and full-time Team Members of Maloof Sports & Entertainment will refurbish the Roberts Family Development Center at Twin Rivers Housing Complex in a single day.

“This is the sixth consecutive season we have celebrated the memory of Cesar Chavez with a Day of Volunteerism,” said Joe and Gavin Maloof. “To truly honor Mr. Chavez’s lifelong contributions to humanity and his commitment to community service, we decided to make the holiday a ‘day on’ instead of a day off for our employees. The Roberts Family Development Center is a wonderful organization that has provided a vital service to our community for many years. We are thankful to be able to help the center continue its mission of helping families in need.”

Founded in 2001, the Roberts Family Development Center provides services that meet the individual needs of the families it serves in the North Sacramento community. The center’s goal is to nurture personal growth, strengthen families and enhance community development and civic involvement. Services focus on early childhood and family education, economic empowerment and technology and include family literacy, parent, health and consumer education, child care, English language competency, computer competency, recreational needs and family counseling.

“We're extremely excited about the Maloof organization and its partners helping us make a safe and fun place for school-age children and families living in the Twin Rivers Housing Complex,” said Derrell Roberts, CEO and Co-Founder of Roberts Family Development Center. “This demonstrates the continued support the Kings and Monarchs have shown to this community and our organization specifically. We are very thankful for the support of Maloof Sports & Entertainment, Health Net, Raley’s & Bel Air and Wells Fargo.”

“Health Net of California is committed to helping improve the health, fitness and well-being of Sacramento-area families,” said Dave Meadows, Vice President of State Health Programs for Health Net of California. “We are a long-time supporter of the Roberts Family Development Center, and we are delighted to join with Maloof Sports & Entertainment, Wells Fargo and Raley’s & Bel Air on the Cesar Chavez Day of Volunteerism to enhance after-school programs and services.”

“At Raley’s, making a difference in the community is one of our company’s long-standing traditions,” said Bill Coyne, President and CEO of Raley’s Family of Fine Stores. “And it is especially rewarding to help where the need is evident. We are delighted to participate once again in the Cesar Chavez Day of Volunteerism to benefit the very worthy recipient, the Roberts Family Development Center. We anticipate that the new Reading and Learning Center will be a valuable resource to both parents and children to nurture personal growth and strengthen families.”

“Wells Fargo is proud to continue our involvement with Maloof Sports & Entertainment's annual Cesar Chavez Day,” said Felix Fernandez, Northern California Regional President for Wells Fargo. “We are only as good as the communities we serve and we are proud to align ourselves with great organizations like Roberts Family Development Center to help make a difference in the Sacramento community.”

Volunteers will complete a Kings Reading and Learning Center, featuring Wells Fargo’s financial literacy program, Hands on Banking, as well as program support through the Wells Fargo Foundation, a youth game room, which includes a foosball table, ping pong table, television and video game system, a reading lounge, an outdoor play area and a landscape beautification project. A fresh coat of paint will be used in every room and new furniture, electronics, equipment and art will be used for the project.

In 2004, Maloof Sports & Entertainment became the first private, non-agricultural organization to recognize California’s new Cesar Chavez Day as a holiday. Cesar Chavez’s belief that people have an obligation to contribute to their community mirrors the Maloof family’s commitment to community service.

The final product will be unveiled to the children of the Roberts Family Development Center at 4 p.m. during a special celebration attended by the Sacramento Kings team. After the unveil, Kings players will be on-hand to interact with the kids in the newly-renovated center.
