Miller Seeing 20/20

Brad Miller is helping the Kings find their groove and having a great time in the process.

"It just feels good to win and that’s all I care about," Miller said. "Just play well and win. Life is good for me right now.”

Having won four in a row and five straight at ARCO Arena, the Kings are 22-24.

The Kings center is enjoying one of the most productive runs of his career. In the midst of his 10th NBA season, the Indiana native is proving an old adage to be very true.

Hard work pays off.

Miller worked his tail off all summer, but his work ethic hasn't lessened since the 82-game season began. He still maintains a healthy diet, still works out daily and always hits the weight-room before games.

Number 52 has notched two 20-20 games, points and rebounds, respectively, in the past three games and there have only been 20 such performances by a player this season in the league. It is the first time in the Sacramento-era that a Kings player recorded two 20/20 double-doubles in three games.

"When you're in the NBA and you get into a little groove, you get confident and my confidence is really high right now," Miller said. "And we're playing well right now too."

The Kings have been rolling since they finally had everyone healthy enough to play the natural starting lineup six games ago -- Miller, Mikki Moore, Ron Artest, Mike Bibby and Kevin Martin -- having won five of six games they've been together.

"(I've been surprised by) how smooth it can be and how much fun it is," Miller said of playing with the starting five.

In the past 10 games the team has gone 7-3 and Miller has averaged 17 points while shooting 54 percent from the field, 12 boards, four assists, two steals and one block per outing.

But Miller hasn't just been effective of late. This season he ranks as the eighth-most efficient center in the NBA and the fourth-most efficient center of those who have played at least 45 games. In 36 minutes per game, Miller is averaging 15 points while shooting 46 percent from the field and 84 percent from the free throw line, 10 rebounds, four assists, one steal, one block and just two turnovers per game.

While Sacramento has flown under the radar this season, creeping steadily toward .500, Miller's proficiency was finally recognized on Monday as he was named the Western Conference Player of the Week for games played Monday, January 28 through Sunday, February 3.

Miller posted point-rebound double-doubles in each of Sacramento’s three games last week and helped the Kings win all three of their games. He set a career high with 21 rebounds on Jan. 30 against Charlotte, 18 of which came on the defensive end, setting a Sacramento single-game record. Plus, Miller and Chris Webber are the only players in Kings history to record multiple 20-point, 20-rebound efforts.

"It meant more to get the wins," Miller said, deflecting the praise of his second-career Player of the Week Award. "The goal is to get to .500 first and then start thinking about Playoffs. So we're only two games away from our first goal and that's the most important thing."

The next step toward reaching .500 is a battle with the Sonics Wednesday at ARCO Arena. The Kings have their eyes on taking a commanding 3-0 series lead, but the league’s most proficient rebounding team (45 rebounds per game) won't go easily as the team witnessed just nine days ago in Seattle. Miller will be ready. However, his status for the game is questionable.

Hosting many of his teammates and their families for Super Bowl XLII, Miller was helping clean up the kitchen when an unfortunate incident took place. He sliced his index finger trying to clean a knife and needed nine stitches to mend it. That's the way it always seems to go, Miller jokingly told his teammates. But Francisco Garcia, for one, wasn't going to let a cut on Miller's finger be an excuse for his absence.

"What was he doing washing the dishes?" Garcia asked with a smile.

"We need that 20-20," Garcia said. "He can't give us 20-15, it's got to be 20 and 20 for us to be happy with him. He's capable of doing it and he's playing great right now."

Miller has done a lot this season, but one thing he should leave undone from here until the end of the season is the dishes.
