Mike's Q & A with Oldest Campers
What do you do during the offseason?
"I’m getting older, so I take a little bit more time to let my body recover from the season. I probably start working out a month or so after the season ends and really go at it the rest of the summer."
Do you get nervous before games?
"Not nervous, it’s more kind of anxious. I’m ready to start the game, so I don’t become nervous anymore. I used to. My first year I did."
Do you have any special routines that you do before games?
"Here in Sacramento I play cards and video games before I come to the game. When I’m on the road, I like to take two hour naps before a game."
How did it feel when you first came to the Kings?
"It felt good. When I came here, the team was already established. They had been winning already. Coming from a team (Vancouver Grizzlies) that would win like 30 games in three years, it was tough. But all the guys – Vlade, Webb, Bobby, Hedo, Doug, as you go all the way down the line – they made me feel like I had been here my whole career. It made it a lot easier for me to transition to a new team."
Do you still keep in touch with Chris Webber and all the other guys from those old times?
"Yeah, I still talk to him, especially when I see him. I really don’t want to bother him, but other than that, I still talk to him."
How hard is it to be out there practicing all the time?
"It’s not hard. I feel I was made for it, so I practice a lot. It’s my job, so I have to go out and do it."
How many years have you been in the league now?
"This will be my tenth year"
What teammate that you’ve had is your favorite player?
"I like playing with all of them. There isn’t really one that I could pick out of them. You have fun when you’re with them every day for eight months. You become used to being with them and you just try to have fun out there."
Who’s been the best defender you’ve played against?
"The best defender I’ve played against, I think, is Mugsy Bogues. He’s like 5-2 and you have to dribble with your back all the way up (Mike stood up and demonstrated, backing down a defender). I played against him, Mookie Blaylock and a lot of other guys. Little guys are usually harder."
Who is the hardest person for you to guard?
"For me to guard, maybe Stephon Marbury."
What’s the hardest team to face in the NBA?
"The hardest team to face is probably the Spurs. They have good team defense. They help each other out really well."
Is there a team that you always love to play and can’t wait to play every season?
"I’d probably say the Lakers."
How does it feel when you know you’re on a hot streak?
"It feels good. I just like to win regardless of how things are going for me. When I’m out there, I like to compete."
Is it hard to keep your focus with all the trade speculation and all that stuff?
"It wasn’t hard. I’ve been traded before. Regardless, the team I was playing with my friends. I’m not going to leave them out to dry. Regardless, if they traded me or not, I was going to try to play hard."
What team were you on before you came to the Kings?
"Vancouver Grizzlies before they moved to Memphis. They were in Vancouver, Canada before they moved to Memphis. "
How do you predict you guys will do this year?
"I don’t know. We’ll see. Trades and everything aren’t done yet. So you have to wait until the season starts to see who you have and what you’re going to do with that."
Are you going to snatch that MVP award next year?
"That’s a lot of politics. I don’t think they’re going to give it to me."
