As a part of the Read to Achieve campaign, Sacramento Kings players Ron Artest and Mikki Moore visited students at Father Keith B. Kenny Elementary School to host a reading time out in honor of Black History Month.
Artest started the program off by reading a book about Jackie Robinson, the first African American baseball player to play Major League Baseball.
Mikki read a book about Muhammad Ali, the former boxing heavy weight champion of the world.
Ron and Mikki also explained the importance of Black History, reading and staying in school.
To make learning fun, Ron and Mikki played Black History Month trivia with the kids, asking them questions about prominent African Americans. For every correct response, the players handed out a prize.
After interacting with the students, Ron and Mikki presented them with Kings bookmarks, comic books and other fun Kings gifts.
Reaching an estimated 50 million children annually, the year-round Read to Achieve campaign is the most extensive educational outreach initiative in the history of professional sports. The program is designed to help young people develop a life-long love for reading and encourage adults to read regularly with children.
