The eldest son of Colleen and the late George J. Maloof, Sr., Joseph Maloof is President of the Maloof Companies. Joe's business expertise and leadership qualities have helped enhance and diversify the corporation's growth since his father's death in 1980.

Joe manages the Maloof Companies' nearly 2,500 employees with an open door policy, much like his father did nearly 30 years ago. He also believes in treating customers in a first-class manner and with the utmost respect, and is often seen talking and listening to the fans and customers of the various family businesses.

"My father's business philosophy of taking care of our customers and employees was successful long ago, and all of us in the family have chosen to manage with that same style," says Joe.

His extensive expertise in management, sales, and marketing has been invaluable during the company's expansion into banking, hotels, and gaming over the past 20 years. He currently serves on the Board of the Coors Distributor Council. In May of 1999, he was appointed to the NBA Board of Governors by Commissioner David Stern after the Maloof family, including his brother Gavin, was unanimously approved by the Board to assume controlling interest of the Kings.

Like all of his family, Joe's charitable efforts are an important aspect of his personal and professional life. He has assisted countless community service groups through the years, including the Boys Club, the University of New Mexico, the American GI Forum, the Airport Little League, and the League of Latin American Citizens, to name just a few.

He has a passion for competition, stemming from his days as a prep and collegiate athlete. He was MVP of his high school basketball team at Lawrenceville Prep School (Lawrenceville, N.J.), and was a two-time letterwinner as a defensive back at the University of New Mexico, where he graduated in 1979 with a degree in business.

Joe resides in Sacramento, fewer than five miles from ARCO Arena. He enjoys working out and is an avid tennis player.

Maloof chatted live online on Thursday, August 23. See what he had to say!

First we want to thank you for our Kings and your dedication to the city. Is it realistic that a new stadium will be built within the next six years? Go MONARCHS!

Joe Maloof at 3:59pm ET
Yes it is realistic. Right now, the mayor of Sacramento Heather Fargo has commissioned to look at the possibilities of putting a new arena downtown. The Kings will do whatever is best for Sacramento and its fans. And if that means a new arena downtown, we would definitely be interested.

Zack from proxy.aol.com at 3:59pm ET
Do you think the trade for Mike Bibby and a better Hedo Turkoglu will be enough to beat the Lakers in the Western Conference Finals?

Joe Maloof at 4:01pm ET
Well, I was proud of our team last year. We lost to the Lakers by three in two of the games and by six in the another game. I think we make progress and got closer to the Lakers. With the addition of Mike Bibby and a maturing Hedo, we think we can compete with them. I like our chances of going further in the playoffs than last year.
Syed from nyc-t.navipath.net at 4:01pm ET
How happy were you when Chris Webber resigned with the Kings?

Joe Maloof at 4:02pm ET
Extremely happy! I think it legitimized our franchise. It showed other players in the league that Sacramento has a wonderful basketball enviroment.
Dan from dsl9231.surewest.net at 4:02pm ET
Hey Joe! Did you or your brother ever end up mowing Chris's lawn?

Joe Maloof at 4:03pm ET
(Laughs.) Gavin says I have to mow Chris's lawn before the first regular-season game of next year.

Ceyhun at 4:03pm ET
What do you think about Hedo? Will he be star in the NBA? And is he going to be a starter this year?

Joe Maloof at 4:04pm ET
Right now, I don't think he will start this year. But he had a great series against the Lakers that showed toughness. We are excited about his progress. He is so versatile. He can play four positions. He can be a point guard too. He is hard to match up against. Hedo has worked all summer on his long-range shooting. We have high expectations for Hedo.
Christopher Brooks from themoneystore.com at 4:05pm ET
Thanks so much for your contribution to the Sacramento community. My question is what has been the most rewarding as well as challenging endevor you have participated in to date?

Joe Maloof at 4:07pm ET
Most rewarding thing that Gavin and I have had is the success of the team on the court. We love the Sacramento fans. They are the best and most loyal fans we have. It's exciting to put a great team on the floor for them to enjoy. The most challenging part is that we try and keep the time together. We had a great year last year, but we had some anxious moments with Webber's free agency. But since Chris has decided to stay, we are excited about what lies ahead.
Sam Mehok from proxy.aol.com at 4:07pm ET
I am a really great Kings fan, and I think that you have helped make the kings what they are today. Well my question is how do you think the fans will respond to losing Jason??? I know he was a fan favorite, and was my fave player, but how will the crowds react??
Sam Mehok

Joe Maloof at 4:08pm ET
It was upsetting to sign off on the decision to trade Jason. He has been vital to our success, but as with anything, it was time to move on. We like Bibby's controlled style of play. He will give us a new dimension to our play that can enable us to go further in the playoffs.
Alex from stk.inreach.net at 4:09pm ET
You're a great owner. What do you think about Peja? Do you think he will be a future superstar?

Joe Maloof at 4:10pm ET
Peja will be an All-Star, in our belief. Peja has one of the best jumpers in the league, but more importantly, he has improved his defense and toughness. We expect Peja to become more of a leader. Chris and Peja are a great combo.
Randy Ott from 018.popsite.net at 4:10pm ET
Joe, Mike Bibby for Jason Williams was the coup that elevated the KINGS to one of the best starting five in the NBA. The other 28 teams know they must respect this crew. But Shaq is still trouble. Where on your priority list is acquiring another big body to help Vlade and Scot?

Joe Maloof at 4:11pm ET
Right now, we have the team that we want. There are no immediate plans to change the chemistry of the team. We will see how the new players do before we make any decisions.
Tony at 4:11pm ET
What do you think is the one item that the Kings need to work on the most in order to have a championship season? I really believe in my heart, mind and soul that the Kings will do it this time.

Joe Maloof at 4:13pm ET
I really believe that we have all the ingredients (and Coach Adelman doesn't like me saying this) to win it all. We gave the Lakers the best competition in the playoffs last year. We weren't that far off. We can win it this year.

Katie from mis.prserv.net at 4:13pm ET
Thank you for finally bringing a winning franchise to SacTown. Do you know if the early games on East coast swings are going to be televised locally? Last year you said that you were going to try to do that.

Joe Maloof at 4:14pm ET
This year we have increased the number of games we are showing on TV that are played back East. Out of 82 games, more than 3/4 of them will be televised.
CFoote at 4:14pm ET
Will Sacramento be looking to bring in any free agents in to camp this year? Also do you see Goeff making any more trades before next season starts?

Joe Maloof at 4:15pm ET
We are not bringing anymore free-agents in right now, or making any trades.
Debra Miller from lpcorp.com at 4:15pm ET
Joe: I would like to know how you feel Lawrence Funderburke will fit into the line-up this year. I feel on and off the court he is a class act. Do you feel he'll see more playing time?

Joe Maloof at 4:17pm ET
Lawrence backs up Chris and has done a great job. It depends on how healthy Chris stays. We have confidence in Lawrence. He's a professional who will be ready to play when he is called upon, but Chris will get most of the minutes.
Mark D from proxy.aol.com at 4:17pm ET
Joe, what has it been like taking a 20-win-season team to a potential NBA Champs Contender?

Joe Maloof at 4:18pm ET
It's been exhilirating, but it's been tough. We have doubled the payroll and are committed to putting a championship team on the court.
brewersyeest from recordnet.com at 4:18pm ET
Joe: Are you fully confident that Rick Adelman is the kind of coach who can guide this team to an NBA Championship? Is there any timetable set when, if the team doesn't, a change might be in order?

Joe Maloof at 4:20pm ET
We have so much confidence in Rick. He has been to the Finals twice. The players respect him and like to play for him. As long as the players respect coach, good things are going to happen. In fact, we don't like to make changes for change's sake. As long as Rick wants to coach, Gavin and I are 100 percent behind him.
babyj from proxy.aol.com at 4:20pm ET
Will your first round pick Wallace see much playing time, and, if so, what role will he be playing: a slasher type role where he can run the floor and be effective or a role as a defensive specialist or something of that nature? I feel as if you have the Rookie of the Year, and just remember I said it first.

Joe Maloof at 4:22pm ET
Right now, we have no player on our team who has Gerald's athletic ability. We love his capabilities, and he gives us a new dimension. He plays great defense, but he has a lot to learn. He is only 19. This summer, he has worked on his outside game. He needs to be more than just a slasher. He was great in summer league play. He showed no fear. Gerald knows he has to work hard to be successful.

Joe Maloof at 4:25pm ET
Gavin and I want to thank all the Kings fans for the support they have given the Kings over the past 15 years. We want the city to know that we will do whatever it takes to have a fun, exciting basketball team. Thank you also, for supporting the Monarchs. Give them your best when we play the Sparks this weekend. Let's fill the arena! We have a team that can win the WNBA Championship.
