DMC Set for USA Training
As Cousins prepares to participate in National Team training and exhibition, get an overview of the roster and process to select this summer’s World Cup Team.
Led by Kings center DeMarcus Cousins, 19 NBA players representing 18 NBA teams have been named to the USA Basketball Men’s National Team roster from which the 2014 USA World Cup Team will be selected.
"I'm going to try to make the best of the situation and be the best player in the camp,” said Cousins recently.
Among those who will be joining the Kings center in Las Vegas July 28-Aug. 1 include fellow big men Anthony Davis, Andre Drummond, Blake Griffin and Kevin Love, as well as guards Derrick Rose, Damian Lillard and Stephen Curry, to name a few.
Searching for Gold, Again
This year’s team features four members of the 2012 U.S. Olympic Basketball Team that played in London and brought home gold including, Kevin Durant, Love, James Harden and Davis.
The complete squad includes the following: Curry and Klay Thompson (Golden State), Irving (Cleveland), Griffin (Clippers), Rose (Chicago), Paul George (Indiana), Lillard (Portland), Gordon Hayward (Utah), Cousins (Sacramento), Bradley Beal (Washington), Drummond (Detroit), Kenneth Faried (Denver), Kyle Korver (Atlanta), DeMar DeRozan (Toronto) and Chandler Parsons (Dallas).
The 2014-16 USA Basketball National Team coaching staff features USA Head Coach and Duke University’s Naismith Hall of Famer Mike Krzyzewski. Serving as assistant coaches are Syracuse University and Naismith Hall of Fame coach Jim Boeheim, Chicago Bulls Head Coach Tom Thibodeau and New Orleans Pelicans Head Coach Monty Williams.
According to USA Basketball Chairman and National Team Managing Director Jerry Colangelo, the roster could be trimmed to 15 after the camp in Las Vegas. Also, the final 12 players will be announced before the team departs for the World Cup of Basketball in Spain in late August.
Following mini-camp, which takes place Monday-Thursday, a USA Blue versus USA White exhibition contest will take place on Friday at Thomas & Mack Center.
USA Men's National Team Training Camp will take place Aug. 14-15 in Chicago.
World Cup Preparation
The American squad will continue its World Cup preparations Aug. 17-22 in New York and play a pair of exhibition games at Madison Square Garden, the first on Aug. 20 against Dominican Republic, and the second versus Puerto Rico on Aug. 22. USA will complete its pre-World Cup tour Aug. 24-26 in Gran Canaria, Spain. Training Aug. 24-25, the U.S. will close out its exhibition tour on Aug. 26 facing Slovenia at Gran Canaria Arena.
FIBA World Cup
The 2014 FIBA World Cup, featuring a total of 24 national teams, is set for Aug. 30-Sept. 14 in Spain. The USA World Cup Team will play its preliminary round games in Bilbao, Spain, after being drawn into Group C along with teams from the Dominican Republic, New Zealand, Turkey and Ukraine.
USA opens 2014 World Cup preliminary round play on Aug. 30 against Finland, and then faces Turkey on Aug. 31 in a rematch of the 2010 FIBA World Championship gold medal game, a contest in which USA claimed an 81-64 victory. Following a day off on Sept. 1, USA resumes play Sept. 2 facing New Zealand. The U.S. will go against Dominican Republic on Sept. 3, and will conclude its preliminary play on Sept. 4 versus Ukraine.
