After training with the 2012 USA Basketball Men’s Select Team last offseason, Kings center DeMarcus Cousins has been invited to participate in the annual National Team mini-camp for the second consecutive year.

The session began Monday in Las Vegas – where many of the game’s rising stars have gathered for practices – and culminates with an intra-squad exhibition contest at Thomas & Mack Center on Thursday at 6 p.m. PDT on NBA TV.

The Kings big man – who averaged a team-leading 17.1 points and 9.9 rebounds per game in his third season – is joined in mini-camp by a collection of talented up-and-comers, including Anthony Davis, Paul George, Kyrie Irving, Ty Lawson, Damian Lillard, Greg Monroe and John Wall.

Duke University Head Coach Mike Krzyzewski will run mini-camp and coach the U.S. Olympic team, while New Orleans Pelicans Head Coach Monty Williams, Chicago Bulls Head Coach Tom Thibodeau and Syracuse University Head Coach Jim Boeheim will serve as assistants.

In addition to scrimmaging with the Select Team last summer, No. 15 previously represented the U.S. on the 2009 USA Nike Hoop Summit Team, and also took part in the 2007 Youth Development Festival, in which he averaged 9.2 points, 10.0 rebounds, 1.6 steals and 1.0 blocks per game.

Cousins – who ranked among the top 10 in scoring, rebounding, double-doubles, assists and Player Efficiency Rating among all qualified centers in 2012-13 – has rigorously worked on strength and conditioning during the offseason with his sights set on all-around improvement.

“I’m focused on every part of my game – there’s no specific area,” said the Kentucky product in a recent interview with NBA TV. “But I really want to improve on the defensive end next year.”

Contending with many of the top big men in the League at USA Basketball mini-camp this week presents Cousins a prime opportunity to continue to progress as a defender and develop into an All-Star caliber center.
