Closer Look: John Collins

A promising freshman year at Wake Forest helped lay the foundation for John Collins during his sophomore year, where he blossomed into one of the most effective and impressive big men in the nation.

Standing 6-foot-10, Collins utilized his size, high energy and superb skill set to turn in a historic season for the Demon Deacons. In his second year, the Utah native led his team in points (19.2 per game), rebounds (9.8 per game), and blocks (1.6). Not to mention his Player Efficiency Rating of 35.9, which was tops in the nation.

While Collins possesses impressive size, his quickness for a big man also gives him an edge and allows him to run the floor in transition while also giving him potential to be an effective defender of multiple positions. In addition, his ability to knock down shots at an ultra-efficient rate (62.2 field goal percentage last season) makes him a reliable scoring option, particularly at the rim where he was a proven finisher with lob plays, as well.

No. 20 turned in what would be his most dominant performance in a contest against Duke, logging a career-high 31 points and 16 rebounds in a heated battle against Wake Forest’s ACC rival.

With his promising improvements shown after two seasons of play in college, Collins appears to be a Draft candidate with high upside heading into June, where he could help bolster the frontcourt of the future for an NBA squad.
