Internationally, the Jr. NBA/Jr. WNBA now has more than 218,000 players, coaches, parents and officials participating from 65 leagues in ten countries and territories, including China, Japan, Philippines, England, Germany, Italy, Belgium, Canada, Puerto Rico and the Marianas Islands.
PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS
England
Jr. NBA/Jr. WNBA UK provides a structured basketball development plan for young people (both boys and girls) by facilitating free basketball coaching, grassroots competitions, local volunteer recruitment, and coaching development. Launched on September 5th, the programme will deliver coaching every week for three hours at community projects for the Arsenal, Chelsea/Fulham, Crystal Palace, Everton, and Portsmouth football clubs.
Jr. NBA UK Tip Off
China
Completing its third successful season in 2007-08, the Jr. NBA China program reached more than 54,000 players and parents. A 15-city tour of skills clinics and competition culminated in a training camp for 80 players. Out of the 80 players, the top 10 were selected for a trip to 2008 NBA All-Star in New Orleans, Louisiana, with a friendship game vs. U.S. Jr. NBA team at NBA Jam Session.
Japan
Completing its second season, Jr. NBA Japan program proved to be successful by a strong showing in two friendly games at the New Jersey Nets practice facility against N.Y./N.J. All-Stars in January 2008. The program consisted of three training camps and 13 community events based on skills instruction. Out of nearly 500 players (11-12 year olds), the top 12 players were selected from training camps. These players were evaluated on their basketball skills and attention to the value of sportsmanship.
Philippines
In the first year of the Jr. NBA Philippines, the program targeted nearly 40,000 students. With the focus being on fundamentals, youngsters were evaluated and advanced to week-long training camp. Jr. NBA/Jr. WNBA Coaches traveled to Philippines to conduct instruction and the evaluation process. The program culminated with a trip to San Francisco, CA for the top six athletes. During that weekend, the team attended a clinic at Oracle Arena, played an exhibition game vs. local Jr. NBA team, toured the arena and the Bay Area, and attended a Golden State Warriors game.
India
Jr. NBA India hosted its first Jr. NBA/Jr. WNBA clinic in New Delhi, India on July 6, 2008. Nearly 175 youngsters from age 8-18 attended the clinic. NBA Players Kyle Korver, Pat Garitty, Ronny Turiaf, Linton Johnson and NBA Legends Sam Perkins and Dominique Wilkins hosted the clinic.
