Utah Jazz Recognizes the 150th Anniversary of the Gettysburg Address
West High School Students to Recite the Address On-Court Nov. 18 with an Assist from Jazz Guard John Lucas III
SALT LAKE CITY (November 14, 2013) - The Utah Jazz will honor the 150th anniversary of the Gettysburg Address on Monday, Nov. 18 when the Jazz hosts the Golden State Warriors at EnergySolutions Arena at 7 p.m. The celebration will feature an on-court, pregame recitation of President Abraham Lincoln’s famous speech by 120 students from West High School, Larry H. Miller’s alma mater, with an assist from Jazz guard John Lucas III.
The event is part of the Jazz organization’s efforts to support youth education and the mission of GettyReady, a Utah-based non-profit established to encourage learners of all ages to memorize, study and apply the Gettysburg Address on its anniversary and beyond. Commemoration of the address serves to remind the public of the nation’s founding doctrine of freedom and the enduring, timeless principle that all human beings are equal.
“I am thrilled to help honor the 150th anniversary of the Gettysburg Address,” said Lucas III. “This event provides a great educational opportunity for local students and fans of all ages. The text should be celebrated and shared as it still holds great significance in our daily lives.”
