Stockton Re-Signed to Contract

SALT LAKE CITY, Sept. 27 -- Utah Jazz owner Larry H. Miller announced today that the team has signed veteran guard John Stockton to a new multi-year contract. Terms of the contract were not disclosed.

The NBA's all-time leader in assists and steals, Stockton has spent his entire 17-year career with the Jazz, playing in 1,340 games, good for third on the league's all-time list. He also set an all-time NBA record during the 2000-2001 season for most played with one franchise, surpassing John Havlicek's total of 1,270 with the Boston Celtics.

During his career, he has played in 1,340 of a possible 1,362 games, missing just 22 games due to injury and has played in every game in 15 of his 17 seasons.

Despite turning 39-years-old in March, Stockton finished the 2000-2001 season second in the league in assists (8.7), second in the league in three-point field percentage (.462) and was seventh in field goal percentage (.504). He also averaged 11.5 points while playing 29.2 minutes per game. Over his illustrious career, he has averaged 13.2 points, 10.8 assists and 2.22 steals, while shooting .517 from the field and .388 from three-point range.

He became the NBA's all-time leader in assists in 1994-95, passing Magic Johnson's total of 9,921 and has now totaled 14,503. Johnson currently stands second on the all-time list with 10,141. He passed Maurice Cheeks (2,310) to become the NBA's all-time leader in steals during the 1995-96 campaign and has now tallied 2,976. Cheeks still stands in second place on the all-time list.

Stockton holds the NBA record for most seasons leading the league in assists (nine, 1987-88 through 1995-96), most consecutive seasons leading the league in assists, most assists in a single season (1,164, 1990-91) and highest single-season asiists-per-game average (14.5 assists, 1990-91). He has accounted for seven of the nine seasons of 1,000 or more assists in league history.

He was named one of the 50 Greatest Players in NBA history in 1996 and is a two-time Olympic Gold Medal winner as a member of the 1992 "Dream Team" in Barcelona, Spain and 1996 U.S. team in Atlanta. He has been named to the All-NBA First Team twice (1993-94 and 1994-95), the All-NBA Second Team six times and to the All-NBA Third Team three times. He has also been selected to the NBA's All-Defensive Second Team five times.

Stockton is expected to be in uniform on Tuesday morning to begin his eighteen season, when 2001-2002 training camp opens at Franklin Covey.
