Utah Jazz Head Coach, Jerry Sloan, was named the
Sporting News Coach of the Year, it was announced today by the
Sporting News.
“It is certainly appropriate that he be honored by his peers in this manner,” said Jazz Owner, Larry H. Miller. “Coach Sloan has the ability to take all levels of talent and experience and make a difference on the court. This award reflects not just Jerry Sloan’s coaching ability but his continued determination to win.”
Despite not making the playoffs for the first time in 20 years, Utah Jazz coach Jerry Sloan, 62, was named Sporting News Coach of the Year. Sloan, who had to contend with the loss of Karl Malone and John Stockton, led the Jazz to a 42-40 record and has a 917-561-career record over 18 seasons.
“The organization appreciates everything Coach Sloan done for the franchise over the past 16 years,” said Sr. Vice President of Basketball Operations, Kevin O’Connor. “We feel it is an honor he deserves.”
Sloan received 12.5 of 24 votes cast by his fellow NBA coaches, finishing ahead of Memphis' Hubie Brown, who received 9.5 votes. Jeff Bzdelik, Denver Nuggets and Stan Van Gundy, Miami Heat tied for third with one vote apiece.
