Lake City, UT – Utah Jazz Senior Vice President of Basketball Operations, Kevin
O’Connor, announced today that the team has signed restricted free agent Carlos Boozer to a multiyear contract. Per club policy terms of the deal were not
disclosed.
The Jazz signed Boozer to an offer sheet on July 14, 2004 and under the Collective Bargaining Agreement set forth by the National Basketball Association, the Cleveland Cavaliers had 15 days to match the offer. The Cavaliers did not match the offer within the allotted time frame allowing the Jazz to sign Boozer.
“We’re
thrilled to have a young power forward who has demonstrated that he can play at
a high level in the league,” said O’Connor.
“Utah
has a great coach and is a first-class organization,” said Boozer. “They are
going to present me with an opportunity to be who I want to be individually as a
player and at the same time be part of a winning franchise that contends for a
championship.”
Boozer
was named to the USA Basketball Men’s Senior National Team on July 8 and will
participate in the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens, Greece. The US Team is
currently training in Jacksonville, Fla. and will play their first exhibition
game on Saturday, July 31 against Puerto Rico.
Selected by the Cavaliers in the second round (35th pick overall) of
the 2002 NBA Draft, Boozer played and started in 75 games for the Cavaliers
during the 2003-04 season and averaged 15.5 points and 11.4 rebounds (fifth
overall in the league) in 34.6 minutes per game.
The 6-9
forward has played in 156 career games (129 starts) over two seasons with the
Cavaliers and has averaged 12.6 points and 9.4 rebounds in 29.8 minutes per
game.
Boozer finished his
collegiate career at Duke as their all-time leader in field goal percentage with
.631 percent (554-878) which ranks third all-time in the ACC. Played in 101
games as a Blue Devil and averaged 14.9 points and 7.2 rebounds in three
seasons.
