Playoffs 2008 Round 2 Game 4 Quotes

1

On the game
“They continued to hit shots in the fourth quarter. We were a little tentative and they tied the game, but we felt that going into overtime we still had the energy to compete and to bring it. That’s what we did. We made stops when we had to, we made free throws, and made shots. That’s a big win for us.”

Taking over the offense
“I thought we started out great pushing the ball and getting out in transition to build a little lead. That is what got us going. When I see guys struggling offensively, that is when I try to get everyone involved. If we are struggling a little to score I try to assert myself in the game.”

What he said to Memo after the technical
“We just had to stick together and not worry about the refs. You have to let things go how they go. If they call a foul, just keep playing. It’s all we can do. We did a good job after that at staying composed, keeping our poise, and doing the things we need to do to win.”

Confidence level after tying the series
“We are definitely confident now. We have to prove that we can win one on the road. We don’t have home court advantage so at some point we have to win one on the road. Our first two games didn’t go exactly how we wanted them to go. We made some adjustments in these past two games and we feel like we are playing better basketball. We are more equipped to go over there and get the win.”

JERRY SLOAN, JAZZ HEAD COACH

On the team keeping their poise down the stretch
“I was really impressed, and the thing that really kind of seemed to give us a little bit of life was our second group gave us a lift. Obviously, trying to deal with them coming down the stretch is almost impossible because they’ve got so many guys that make three-point shots. We have to have a little bit of things fall our way, and in the overtime Memo made a couple big shots to get us a little bit of breathing room and from that point on we seemed to kind of exchange baskets.”

On how much of a difference the Jazz shooting more free throws than the Lakers made
“It always has been. Even though we didn’t get as many points inside, I think it had a lot to do with the way we started the ballgame. We pushed the ball up the floor. They missed some shots in the early part of the ballgame that allowed us to get in the open court. You’re wondering if you’re going to have any energy to play after you get through the first quarter. That game was really up-tempo for us, but you know they’ve got the ability to come back and we just hoped that we would have enough energy and fortunately we had enough to get it into overtime and win the ballgame.”

On Deron keeping the team poised after Memo’s technical
“That’s what he’s been able to do all along. He’s a terrific player, tries to get us in what we want to do, and he’s really great at trying to get players where they need to be. Obviously you got to make some shots, and he did, and he’s just growing and growing and growing as a great player everyday. You don’t have much coaching to do when he does the things that he does.”

On Kobe still being able to hurt them even though he was having an “off night”
“You should sit there and have to worry about that. That’s not a pleasant feeling. I’ve been in it a couple times and usually come up short. But our guys were fighting really hard and they were really trying hard to do everything they can.”

RONNIE BREWER, JAZZ GUARD

On today’s game
“We knew they were going to come out with a lot of intensity trying to match our crowd. We had to sustain that. A lot of guys came out there and played well at the end of the game and we just fed off that for all five quarters.”

On blocking Kobe’s shot
“I think he came to the basket and spun and tried to shoot a fade away, but I came away with a blocked shot and I think he fell. I think his back was bothering him a little bit, but we’ve got a couple of days off so we know he’s going to be ready to play next game.”

RONNIE PRICE, UTAH GUARD

On Turiaf’s flagrant foul
“It’s the playoffs, that’s all I can say. It happens. It just so happens that me and Ronnie are good friends. We came up the same year. He probably didn’t mean to foul me like that, but your emotions run and things happen.”

On his words with Turiaf after the foul
“Let’s just leave that on the court.”

CARLOS BOOZER, JAZZ FORWARD

On Kobe playing through injuries
“He looked good to me. Kobe’s a tough guy. It’s the playoffs. We all have bumps and bruises. We’re all playing through something right now. For him, he’s ready to play every night no matter if he’s sick, banged up, or if he’s… whatever. It’s playoff time.”

On the technical called against Memo
“I didn’t see that [Memo’s reaction to the foul call]. I tried to tell the refs he was talking to me, but they didn’t want to listen to that. But I didn’t know he did that. I thought it was a tough call.”

If tonight was the most physical game of the series
“There will probably be more physical games to come.”

PHIL JACKSON, LAKERS HEAD COACH

On the game
“It comes down to a couple defensive stops we have to make. I really had to jump our second unit a little bit again tonight, because they let us down in the fourth quarter. We had to come back and play out of a double digit deficit again. It put a lot of pressure on the starters to have to play at a pace in which they were pretty exhausted going into overtime.”

On Fisher’s foul trouble the last two games
“It’s bothered us both games. He only played three minutes and some seconds in the first half.”

On whether he thought Ronny Turiaf’s flagrant foul call was correct
“Absolutley not. I thought the kid (Ronnie Price) was out of control when he went in. Ronny did go up to block the shot, but I think he entirely played the ball. I haven’t seen a call like that, I was very surprised he (Turiaf) was put out of the ball game.”

On Kobe Bryant
“I was angry at his teammates for dropping the ball off in his lap when he was in a situation. He was making plays and we had things going at the end of the fourth quarter and I felt guys just bailed out on him.”

On Kobe’s Back
“In the fourth period, in the sequence that cost us a timeout when he went down, I was concerned at that time for him (Kobe); he had a hard time getting up. Kirilenko got up underneath him and he went down and he couldn’t get back up real easy. We were concerned enough to call a timeout. I still thought he went to the basket hard at the end. I thought he got fouled on the play; there was no call on it.

KOBE BRYANT, LAKERS GUARD

How did your back factor into the loss.
“No excuses for me. AK (Andrei Kirilenko) did a great job. Great defensive player. They just did a terrific job. They made big plays when they needed to, and you know, we cut it to within one. Derek makes a big shot. We gave ourselves opportunities. It just didn’t work out for us. "

How did you hurt your back?
“Second play of the game. Turnaround jump shot. Spun and back just caught on me. It was out since. "

How does this compare to past injuries.
“Well back is a little different because you gotta, you know, you gotta make some adjustments. You know you can’t run like you want to, cut like you want to. You know, it’s back."

On Phil Jackson’s previous quote about team bailing out on Kobe in overtime.
“I know what he means by that. He wants them to come to me, but come to me later in the offense. Not right away and then just stand around. That’s something that we talked about, and um you know, but next time we’ll be ready.”

PAU GASOL, LAKERS CENTER

On the game
“There was definitely a great chance after coming back. We had them where wanted them, and we weren’t able to execute. We didn’t get the shots that we needed to get in overtime. They got pretty good looks, and offensive boards. That is what gave them the victory.”

On the Lakers’ breakdown on offense
“We didn’t do a good job at executing, running our style, and moving with the ball. We got stuck too much and that helps the defense to get set and be effective. That made us settle. It is hard sometimes to play when this crowd is so loud. It is hard to communicate out there. We just didn’t execute enough.”

On missed free throws
“We missed a lot of free throws and that is the key. If we made a few more free throws the game would have been ours, and we would be in a different situation.”

RONNY TURIAF, LAKERS CENTER

On his flagrant foul and ejection
“First of all, I want to apologize to my teammates for the result of my foul. In no way shape or form was I trying to hurt anybody. In no way shape or form was I trying to do anything dirty. I was going for a blocked shot and unfortunately, Ronnie Price is a point guard, and I am a big guy, and unfortunately our bodies collided and he fell to the floor. It is very unfortunate the way everybody reacted to it because it was questioning my character.”

1

LUKE WALTON, LAKERS FORWARD

On the game
“We’re better shooters than that. In a hostile environment in a tight game, it’s going to be real tough to win a game like that.”

On overtime
“We stopped executing. We spent a lot of energy trying to get back into the game.”

How do you take the series back?
“Get home, get back to what we were doing early in the series. We need to get out and get the lead and play from ahead instead of playing from behind.”
