Utah Jazz Round 1 Game 3 Quotes - Playoffs 2008

Jerry Sloan – Utah jazz Head Coach (2-1 in postseason)

On the game:
“First of all you have to give these guys a lot of credit. They came in here and got themselves ready to go. They showed how much they wanted to win a ball game. They scored 40 points in the paint I thought they brought it right to us all night long. I don’t know how many layups they got, but they did a tremendous job of getting on top of the basket. We had a difficult time trying to contain them, so I think we have to give them credit.”

“That’s what makes this game so interesting is to see guys attitude change with good and bad. I’ve always thought to try and stay focused after the good, you have to think that you’re playing after a loss.  That’s pretty hard to do, to punish yourself and say you’ve lost, even though you’ve won in order to prepare yourself for the next game.”

“They were short handed a little bit with Alston out of the ball game down at their place, and they get him back in our building tonight and he makes a tremendous difference for them.  Put anybody in that situation, and find out who they are when they are really up against a wall. They showed who they were tonight because of their tenacity to get after us.“

Deron Williams – Guard (28 points, 12 assists)

On the last play of the game:
“He [Coach Sloan] said that he wanted to plan a timeout, but once we got the ball and I looked up there was only 15 seconds left, and the play he wanted it would have been hard to get it off with 15 seconds, so we kind of scrambled.  I ended up throwing it to Kyle, I didn’t see Shane on him.  There were so many people down there.  I got it back with about six seconds left and tried to drive, and Landry made a great play.”

About the loss at home:
“It’s very frustrating.  I thought we came out with a little more intensity, but you have to the credit to them.  They came out and executed their game plan, took away our transition, especially in the second half… they did a great job down the stretch. T-Mac took over the game a little bit, and they just got great plays from everyone.  Skip [Alston] came in and did a great job for them and hit some big shots.  Just a great team victory for them.”

Carlos Boozer – Forward (15 points, 13 rebounds)

On missing free throws:
“It was a physical game, you know, it was a defensive game, but the game was lost for us at the free throw line. I know I missed five. I think we missed 13 as a team, that’s the game right there. We make those free throws we win the game. “

On the keeping the team out of the paint in the first half:
“It’s a little bit of us and a little bit of them too. When we got the ball inside we scored. Second half, we got in the lane more, got the layups, got to the free throw line a little bit more. We can get the ball inside, we just got to make it happen and do it.

On a 10-0 run toward the end of the game. What happened?:
“That’s what happened. It’s on the line. We got to do a better job of boxing out, getting the rebounds. They out rebounded us tonight, so we need to focus on that and bounce back in game four.”

Rick Adelman – Houston Rockets Head Coach (1-2 in postseason)

On the game:
“It’s obvious that this is a terrific win for us.  Guys played hard.  Guys just really did what we asked them.  They just controlled the tempo—a couple times I thought we got too caught up in the moment, we wanted to stay consistent mentally, be patient, and keep playing.  Utah made great runs, Korver hit a tough shot, and we made a big mistake on the pick-and-roll and gave Okur the three.  Still, our last possession, defensive possession, was terrific.”

On if this changes the feel of the series:
“We know we’re going home, we know we’ve got another game here.  I think our guys felt all along we could play with them.  Rafer was obviously a huge difference tonight.  To have him back and he made huge shots right off the bat.  The thing he does is he controls the game so well for us.”

On the feel of this win carries over into the next game:
“I think there always is when you have more confidence because you won that first one, but, believe me, it’s going to be a different game the next one.  They’re all different in the playoffs.  We made some plays to open up that fourth quarter…we hope this carries over, hope this gives us some confidence and we can come out and get the next one.”

Tracy McGrady – Guard (27 points, 7 assists)

On the Jazz saying goodbye to Houston too early:
“It feels good.  They actually are going back to Houston.”

On the kiss Alston gave Landry after the block:
“Yeah, it was nasty. I know he was on an emotional high, but that was nasty Rafer.”

Getting a win in their home:
“We did a lot of great things this season, winning 22 games, overcoming the loss of Yao, and still making the playoffs. This was the biggest win of the season. It really was. We played like we really didn’t want to go home early. We played with a lot of passion and a lot of heart. We kept our composure. Down the stretch of the ball game we did a great job.”

Hitting seven shots in a row during the fourth quarter:
“I was just trying to be passive during the fourth quarter. I waited for the right time to really insert myself on the offensive end. I got to the free throw line. It was one-on-one coverage and I got some shots.”

On the rest of the series:
“We’re still confident. If we can come in here and win this game being down 0-2, anything is possible. We’re going to go back and watch some film and correct some things we did wrong.  We’re going to come back with the same passion a
nd energy we did tonight.”

Rafer Alston – Guard (20 points, 5 assists)

On Landry’s block at the end of the fourth quarter:
“Landry saved the game for us or we might be down 3-0.”

On the kiss he gave Landry after the block:
“It’s just, you know, something to do when there is nothing to do.”

On team morale after getting the win:
“It’s great to come in and get a win and put a little pressure on that team, [and] let them know that we’re going to compete and play hard until the bitter end.”

On the effect of tonight’s win on the series:
“It’s still 2-1.”

Luis Scola – Forward (16 points, 10 rebounds)
On the effect of the Rockets win on the rest of the series:
“It will change. It will change. Now we know we can win. The series is in a better situation for us, a way better situation for us. If we would have lost it, it would have been very difficult.”

On the Rockets confidence after tonight :
“We knew that we could win. One thing is knowing you can win, and the other is doing.”
