Coming off a grueling seven game series against Denver, the Jazz were to face Houston in the Western Conference Finals. In game one, the Rockets relied on their newly-crowned MVP Hakeem Olajuwon and came away with a victory, 100-88. Olajuwon finished the game with 31 points, six rebounds, four steals and four blocks. Kenny Smith chipped in 27 points while going 6-9 from downtown to help the #2-seed Rockets get the win. The #5-seed Jazz were led by Karl Malone who finished with 20 points and 16 rebounds and Felton Spencer who had 16 points and 11 rebounds. Though the Jazz would go on to lose the series in five games to the eventual NBA champion Rockets, the average margin of victory for Houston was only 3.4 points.
