Jazz Provides Community Service to Honor Larry H. Miller
Larry H. Miller Group of Companies Utah-based Employees Join in Celebration
On Wednesday, April 14, 2010, the Utah Jazz and Larry H. Miller Group of Companies paid tribute to the late Larry H. Miller by holding a day of celebration in honor of his many contributions to the community.
Randy Rigby, president of the Utah Jazz and the Larry H. Miller Sports & Entertainment Group of Companies, said, “The reason that the Jazz is in Salt Lake City today is because of Larry’s foresight and great commitment to this community.”
The celebration was launched with a community service project that benefited the homeless. The project was coordinated through The Road Home, a social service agency that operates Utah’s largest homeless shelter. Volunteer efforts were centered on three facilities operated by agency, the main shelter, the community winter shelter and Palmer Court, an apartment complex that provides low-income housing to individuals and families transitioning out of homelessness.
Approximately 175 individuals consisting of Utah-based employees from the Larry H. Miller Group of Companies and Jazz staff members donned Utah Jazz Cares T-shirts and worked side by side as volunteers. Activities included tasks such as washing windows and walls, painting curbs, sorting food and clothing, landscaping, and deep cleaning the facilities.
Later that afternoon, the Jazz held a private commemorative luncheon at EnergySolutions Arena. Guests included members of the community who had worked closely with Larry H. Miller over the years.
Fans attending the Jazz vs. Phoenix game that evening received a commemorative LHM musical note lapel pin as they entered the arena. The Jazz in-game magazine, GameTime, was also dedicated to Miller. A Jazz jersey with No. 9, Miller’s softball number, was raised to the rafters during a halftime ceremony that paid tribute to the late owner.
