AU: Not Your Typical or Ordinary Basketball Camp

Charlotte, NC – Fred Whitfield’s 27th Annual Achievements Unlimited Basketball School (AU) will be held in Charlotte, North Carolina from July 18 - 22, 2011 at Ardrey Kell High School for kids ages 8 to 18. Whitfield, AU Founder and Bobcats Sports & Entertainment President & Chief Operating Officer, will be joined by an abundance of sports figures from the NBA, NFL and NASCAR to provide today’s youth with a meaningful, well-balanced and worthwhile experience about what it takes to be successful on the court, in the classroom and in life.

AU is not your ordinary basketball camp that runs campers up-and-down the court all day. Whitfield started AU 26 years ago with three goals in mind: (1) to teach basketball fundamentals; (2) to encourage academic success; and (3) to instill a powerful anti-drug message. To date, his unique vision and empowering messages have reached over 9,000 campers.

On the first day of AU, each camper receives a list of vocabulary words they are required to define and study throughout the week. Counselors quiz campers on their words everyday before beginning fundamental basketball instruction. Participation in AU’s All-Star Game is predicated on a camper’s vocabulary test score and success on the court. All-Star Game participants receive a Jordan Brand All-Star t-shirt and All-Star Game MVP’s receive footwear from Air Jordan. Individual contest winners receive a Jordan Brand backpack and an autographed dictionary by all the special guest sports stars that made a camp appearance during the week.

AU places a very strong emphasis on drug awareness delivering a ‘zero tolerance for drugs’ message. Anuvia Prevention and Recovery Center and Substance Abuse Prevention Services, both member agencies of the Charlotte Mecklenberg Drug Free Coalition, will join AU again this year to educate campers on substance abuse prevention and engage the kids with interactive games and giveaways.

"We are thrilled to be back in Charlotte and look forward to welcoming back some familiar faces, and meeting and seeing some new ones as well," said Whitfield. "Over the years we’ve received unprecedented support from some of the world’s best professional athletes. When players like Alonzo Mourning, Bruce Bowen, Stephen Jackson, Everette Brown, Jon Beason, Allan Houston, Dré Bly and D.J. Augustin come out and speak to our campers, they sit up and listen. We’re all here to make sure these campers understand the importance of getting good grades, staying away from drugs and giving their all on the court. Passing on those positive and inspirational messages is the heart and soul of our camp."

Enrollment is now open for the 2011 Achievements Unlimited Basketball School (AU) in Charlotte, but space is limited. For more information, please visit or
