Bobcats to Host Latin American Night
March 11, 2008
Bobcats Sports & Entertainment, in conjunction with Charlotte-based Hispanic advertising agency ROJO Marketing, announced that it will celebrate the state’s rich cultural makeup by hosting Latin American Night on March 22 when the Bobcats take on the Miami Heat. Local favorite Latin band ‘Bakalao Stars’ will headline a night of Latin American flavor with a free postgame concert.
“With a rapidly growing population here in the Carolinas, we feel like designating this game as Latin American Night is one way to recognize Hispanics and their many contributions to Charlotte’s diverse cultural makeup,” said Bobcats Sports & Entertainment President and Chief Operating Officer, Fred Whitfield. “Charlotte Bobcats Arena is a place for the entire community to come together, and finding ways to be inclusive helps us elevate the Arena’s place as the premiere sports and entertainment destination in the region for people of all backgrounds.”
Featuring themed music, dance and food throughout the evening, Latin American Night will recognize the cultural contributions of various Hispanic countries with the help of the Latin American Coalition. Active in Charlotte since 1990, the Coalition is the city’s largest and oldest Hispanic service agency, and will use Latin American Night to help raise awareness and funds for their programs. Eighteen years ago, Coalition founder Rev. Salvador Negrin recognized the growing needs of Charlotte’s Latino community and joined forces with United Way’s Hispanic Information and Referral Program to organize events like the Latin American Festival and Latin American Night with the Bobcats, striking a balance of cultural programming and social initiatives.
“It’s wonderful to be able to work with a great NBA team in our backyard leveraging our expertise in the Hispanic market,” said ROJO President Sara Garces. “There is tremendous growth here in North Carolina and ROJO, together with the Bobcats is committed to continuing to build strong relationships with Charlotte’s Hispanic community”.
The evening’s headline act, ‘Bakalao Stars’, hail from all over South America with a sound that represents a mixture of influences and genres ranging from reggae to Latin ska and punk rock. Over the years, ‘Bakalao Stars’ has become one of Charlotte's most popular Latin bands due to their unique style and energetic shows, and have shared the stage with bands such as ‘La Rúa’ (declared Charlotte's best live band in 2006 by Creative Loafing), ‘Sóniko’ (Miami, Fl), ‘Papas Underground’ (Washington D.C), ‘Palo Viejo’ (Louisiana/Miami, Fl) and has even participated in all the editions of Carlotan Rock Festival (the biggest Latin rock festival in the Carolinas).
Tickets for Latin American Night start at just $15, with a special “Buy One Get One” offer included for upper level seating. To purchase tickets call (704) BOBCATS, or visit the box office at Charlotte Bobcats Arena.
