Donation to Annual Sports Camp Enables 300 Athletes to Attend
June 13, 2011
Bobcats Sports & Entertainment (BSE) President and Chief Operating Officer Fred Whitfield announced this morning the donation of $10,000 to Special Olympics Athletes Retreat (SOAR), enabling more than 300 Special Olympics athletes to participate in the annual camp held at the Levine Jewish Community Center in Charlotte.
"Camp SOAR is one of those special events that leaves an indelible mark on everyone that participates in and volunteers for each summer," said Whitfield. "Our relationship with Special Olympics goes back to the very beginning of the franchise, but this collaboration with Jordan Brand on Camp SOAR takes it to a new level."
The donation ensures that athletes can again attend the week-long sports festival at no cost. In addition, BSE staff will volunteer their time to work directly with athletes throughout the day on Wednesday, June 15.
"We are very appreciative of the support the Charlotte Bobcats and Jordan Brand are giving to Camp SOAR," said Keith L. Fishburne, Special Olympics NC president/CEO. "Their support will allow even more people with intellectual disabilities the opportunity to be exposed to Special Olympics sports and other fun activities at Camp SOAR."
Special Olympics North Carolina offers year-round sports training and competition for more than 38,000 children and adults with intellectual disabilities. These athletes inspire greatness through their success and provide motivation to the thousands of coaches, sports officials, local program committee members and event organizers involved in Special Olympics statewide. SONC offers Olympic-type competition in 19 sports on local and state levels.
