Inside the Locker Room: April 30, 2003

Head Coach Paul Silas
Silas
(on his team's win)
We started to rebound, and we started to defend. George (Lynch) hit two big three's, and two big rebounds for us. I thought that was the cause of us winning, our defense one and rebounding second.

(on Jamal Mashburn's contribution)
There's no way we could have won the game without him. He kept us in the game early. This thing (injured finger) is killing him. The thing is really sore, and that just shows what his character is about. He just wanted to win so badly. Just his presence would mean a lot to us. He came with it, and gave us 21 good points. It's a whole different ball game. Now our team is intact, and hopefully we can continue to get this thing done.

(on his team's performance)
This is a team that will never quit. For one thing, I won't allow them to quit, under any circumstances, nor use anything as excuses. It was a huge win. It was a huge lift for this team because of all the adversity we've gone through. Hopefully, we can remain healthy, and go home and get that one. Then, it's a whole different ball game.

Davis
(on the remainder of the series)
Nobody wants to say that or believe that (it's over). We have to come out with a focus and intensity and I think we can put them away.

(on George Lynch's performance)
I am happy for him. When we got off the bus he told me 'I am going to come with it tonight. I am going to bring it tonight. Whatever you need I am going to bring it.' And he was focused. He was focused from the get-go. He came up with huge bucket after huge bucket. Tonight it was him who stepped up on the offensive end. We tried to concentrate on stopping them defensively and George Lynch carried us home.

Lynch
(on the meaning of this series against Philadelphia)
There was no special satisfaction. The first four games I was really pressing it. I'm one of the guys on this team that really wants to win this series. It showed the first four games. I was pressing it, wasn't taking advantage of good looks on offense, and when the guys kept it close I was able to watch from the bench and I was able to settle down a little more and it paid off for me offensively.

(on playing for a coach who has confidence in his long-range shooting)
We do a lot of shooting and we chart our shots. I've been able to shoot around 50 percent from three-point range in practice. I've made a number of them. I'm probably shooting better from three-point range than I am from the free throw line this year.

Mashburn
(on playing with a hurt finger)
It is still hurting. Just because I've been out for five or six days doesn't mean it still is not broken. It still is hurting. I told the guys I just didn't want to go home and that was pretty much the bottom line, that I didn't want to go home. It was too early for me. I knew my presence out there would make a difference so I just came out there and played and gave it everything I could.

(on his current limitations)
I had trouble passing the ball and hitting three-point shots. When you are playing in practice there are certain things you can't do, but when you get in the game the energy and the whole environment...a couple of those three's I really had to set myself and go through my mechanics in order to get them up. I still have limitations passing, but I'll let everyone else figure that out.
