NETS TAKE THREE OF FOUR REGULAR SEASON MEETINGS The Hornets dropped the first three meetings of the season against New Jersey, but bounced back to take the final matchup on February 27 by 19 points. Charlotte was held to 86.0 points and 41.4 percent shooting in the three losses before exploding for 104 points on 51.9 percent shooting in the lone victory. Jamal Mashburn led the way for the Hornets with 24.7 points per game. Baron Davis averaged 19.8 points and a team-high 7.5 assists per contest. Keith Van Horn averaged 16.0 points and shot 45.5 percent from three-point range in three appearances against the Hornets. Jason Kidd posted 15.3 points, 9.3 assists, 5.8 rebounds and 2.8 steals for the Nets. Overall, Charlotte has won 11 of the last 15 regular season meetings with New Jersey.
at Continental Airlines Arena Nets 95, Hornets 85 Keith Van Horn scored 29 points and grabbed nine rebounds as the Nets snapped a five-game losing streak to the Hornets with a 95-85 triumph. New Jersey held a 52-48 lead at halftime and took control in the third quarter. Van Horn had five straight points and Jason Kidd added a three-point play for a 69-54 lead with 6:27 left. Charlotte climbed to within six points twice in the fourth quarter, the second time on a three-pointer by Jamal Mashburn that cut the deficit to 87-81 with 3:10 left, but Kenyon Martin made two free throws and Van Horn tossed in one of his five three-pointers to seal the victory. Elden Campbell led the Hornets with 26 points, 10 rebounds and seven blocked shots. The Nets outscored Charlotte 31-9 in fastbreak points. After an Elden Campbell free throw gave Charlotte a 45-38 lead with 10 minutes left in the third quarter, New Jersey countered with a 29-11 run through the end of the period. New Jersey led by as much as 77-61 and Charlotte got no closer than seven points with 49 seconds to go. The Hornets were paced by Campbell's 26 points and 13 rebounds. The Nets led 94-91 before an Elden Campbell short hook cut the lead to one with 15 seconds remaining. Kidd extended the lead to two with a free throw with 13 seconds left. After a timeout, Baron Davis missed a shot with 1.3 seconds left, but Campbell mistakenly backtapped the rebound out, passing on a game-tying layup. Davis led all scorers with 29 points. After New Jersey scored the game's first four points, Charlotte responded with a 25-12 run led by Mashburn, who scored 17 points during the burst and made 8-of-10 shots in the first quarter. The Hornets took a double-digit lead for good on a dunk by Jamaal Magloire late in the first quarter and led by as many as 27 points in the second. Magloire scored 17 points on 7-of-8 shooting and grabbed 10 rebounds. Mashburn made 15-of-20 shots from the floor and 6-of-8 free throws.
