Jefferson Averaged 24.5 Points and 14.3 Rebounds To Lead Bobcats To NBA’s Best Record in April
April 18, 2014
The NBA announced today that Bobcats center Al Jefferson has been named Eastern Conference Player of the Month for games played in April. Jefferson, who led the Bobcats to an NBA-best 7-1 record, earns his second consecutive Player of the Month award and becomes the first center to receive the honor in back-to-back months since Dwight Howard did so in November and December of 2007.
Jefferson saw action in all eight games in the month, averaging 24.5 points on .532 shooting (84-158), 14.3 rebounds and 2.1 assists in 37.9 minutes played. He recorded double-doubles in all eight games, including a franchise-record seven consecutive games with at least 20 points and 10 rebounds. Jefferson ranked second in the Eastern Conference in rebounds for the month, third in scoring and sixth in minutes played.
Jefferson led the Bobcats to a 7-1 record (.875 winning percentage) in April, the best record in the NBA and the highest monthly winning percentage in franchise history. The Bobcats clinched the franchise’s second-ever NBA Playoffs berth with a 96-94 win at Cleveland on April 5. The 7-1 record in April followed a 6-4 mark in February and a 9-7 record in March, giving the Bobcats three consecutive winning months for the first time in team history.
The Bobcats finished the season with a 43-39 record, the second-most wins in team history. The 43 victories are a 22-win improvement from the previous season, more than doubling the total from 2012-13. The Bobcats became the first team in NBA history to double its win total from the previous season in two consecutive seasons. In addition, the Bobcats became the 13th team in NBA history to surpass its win total from the two previous seasons combined.
Jefferson was also named Eastern Conference Player of the Month for games played in March, earning his first Player of the Month award and the first in Bobcats franchise history, and Eastern Conference Player of the Week for games played March 31-April 6.
