March 17, 2014
The NBA announced today that Bobcats center Al Jefferson has been named Eastern Conference Player of the Week for games played from Monday, March 10 through Sunday, March 16. Jefferson led the Bobcats to the only 4-0 week in the Eastern Conference and their second 4-0 week in the last four weeks.
The only player in the Eastern Conference to record four games of 20 points or more in the week, Jefferson averaged 24.3 points on .547 shooting (47-86), 11.5 rebounds, 2.0 assists, 1.3 steals and 1.3 blocks in 37.5 minutes. He ranked second in the Eastern Conference in scoring, fourth in rebounding and tied for eighth in minutes played.
Jefferson was the only player in the NBA to post three games of at least 20 points and 10 rebounds in the week, with 26 points and 13 rebounds on Monday against Denver, 26 points and 10 rebounds on Wednesday at Washington and 25 points and 16 rebounds on Friday against Minnesota. Friday’s contest was his 20th game of the season with at least 20 points and 10 rebounds, setting a new franchise record.
The Bobcats are one of only two teams in the Eastern Conference and four teams in the NBA with current win streaks of four games or more. The team has won six of its last seven games and has a current home win streak of eight consecutive games, which is the second-longest in franchise history.
The award marks the sixth time in his career that Jefferson has earned Player of the Week honors and he becomes the fifth Bobcats player to do so, joining Gerald Wallace (four times), Jason Richardson (two times), Stephen Jackson and Kemba Walker. Jefferson and Walker, who won the award for the week ending February 23, are the third set of teammates to win in the same season, along with Wallace and Richardson in 2007-08 and Wallace and Jackson in 2009-10).
