July 14, 2006
OKLAHOMA CITY - The New Orleans/Oklahoma City Hornets announced today that they have acquired center Tyson Chandler from Chicago in exchange for forward PJ Brown and guard J.R. Smith.
“The opportunity to add Tyson to the Hornets is the perfect scenario for us,” said General Manager Jeff Bower. “His athleticism, shot-blocking and rebounding ability will fit in perfectly with our system and at only 23 years old, he will be able to anchor our front line for years to come.”
Chandler will begin his sixth NBA season as a member of the Hornets. The 7-1, 235-pound center spent the first five years of his career with the Bulls, where he compiled averages of 7.1 points, 7.7 rebounds and 1.4 blocks with a .511 field goal percentage in 340 games. Last season, he averaged 5.3 points, 9.0 rebounds and 1.3 blocks while shooting a career-high .565 from the field.
“I’ve always been a fan of Tyson, and I’m excited about having the chance to help him further develop his career within our system,” said Hornets Head Coach Byron Scott. “As good as he has been for his first five years in the NBA, I can’t wait to be with him as he enters the prime of his career.”
Chandler was originally drafted by the Los Angeles Clippers with the second overall pick in the 2001 NBA Draft, but was traded to Chicago with Brian Skinner in exchange for Elton Brand.
Brown played six seasons with the Hornets, averaging 9.6 points and 8.8 rebounds in 475 games. He departs as the franchise’s all-time leader in offensive, defensive and total rebounds and ranks in the top five in five other categories, including blocks, games played, games started, minutes and seasons played. He was originally acquired by the Hornets from the Miami Heat in a nine-player trade on August 1, 2000.
“PJ Brown has been a consummate professional, an unselfish teammate and a leader on the court and in the community for us in Charlotte, New Orleans and Oklahoma City,” said Hornets Owner George Shinn. “On behalf of our fans and our entire organization, I thank him for everything he’s done for this franchise and wish him and his family the best.”
Smith was selected by the Hornets with the 18th overall pick of the 2004 NBA Draft. He averaged 9.2 points and 2.0 rebounds in 131 games during his two seasons with the team.
