Burrell was the Hornets first round draft pick (20th overall) in the 1993 NBA Draft. He played for the Hornets from the 1993-94 season until midway through the 1996-97 season when he was traded to the Golden State Warriors. In 164 career games with Charlotte, Burrell averaged 8.6 points and 4.1 rebounds, while shooting 44.0 percent from the field and 39.1 percent from three-point range, which ties him for third in Hornets history.
"Scott has been working hard to get back into shape at our practice facility for several weeks," said Executive Vice President of Basketball Operations Bob Bass. "He has a reputation for being a very good defender and three-point shooter."
In 379 career games with Charlotte, Golden State, Chicago and New Jersey, the seven-year veteran has averaged 6.9 points, 3.5 rebounds and shot 37.3 percent from three-point range. Burrell won an NBA Championship as a member of the Bulls during the 1997-98 season. He averaged 6.1 points and 3.5 rebounds in 74 games for New Jersey last season.
"Scott is a high energy-type player that can help us in the playoffs. He's a veteran with playoff experience and will add depth to our bench," said Head Coach Paul Silas.
Burrell's best NBA season was 1994-95 when he averaged 11.5 points, 5.7 rebounds and shot 46.7 percent from the field in 65 games for the Hornets before suffering a partially torn right Achilles tendon. He finished tied for third in voting for the league's Most Improved Player Award that season.
James has played in 30 games for Charlotte this season and averaged 1.5 points and 1.2 rebounds per contest.
