Lauer Sounds Off: Cats Roll into Weekend

Scott Lauer is the radio play-by-play voice of the Charlotte Bobcats. His column will appear on bobcats.com on Thursdays throughout the season. The opinions expressed here are his own and do not necessarily reflect the views of the Bobcats organization.
In the midst of a day when the Bobcats are dedicating their time to being engaged in the community, they also take a two-game winning streak with them into their annual Cats Care Day of Service. They beat Washington on Monday and Toronto on Wednesday.
After registering season bests in points (119), field goal percentage (53 percent), and assists (32) against the Wizards, they had a formidable encore against the Raptors on Wednesday, dropping 107 points, going to the line 40 times, and nailing eight 3’s. Henderson-mania continued – he scored 21 points, with seven boards, five assists and two blocks. It marked the fourth time in five games that the co-captain has struck for at least 21 points.
Byron Mullens pumped in 25 points in 28 minutes off the bench to lead the team in scoring. Fellow big, Josh McRoberts, who came in averaging 12 points and nine boards over his last three games, logged 12 points and 12 rebounds with three assists.
Kemba Walker, who is one of only five players in the NBA to lead his respective team in scoring, assists, and steals (the others are Kyrie Irving, Stephen Curry, Goran Dragic and LeBron James), fouled out with 14 points, seven boards, eight assists and four steals. He’s fourth in the league in thefts.
Ben Gordon scored 16 after earning 19 on Monday, and then there’s Jannero Pargo, who’s quickly becoming the “10-day contract” of the year, scoring 11 points in 12 minutes! He’s 10-for-17 from the arc in his four games with Charlotte! So I just reeled off six names, with hearty contributions in the win over the Raptors – six! That is the very definition of balance. Coach Dunlap declared that this is a “rim and paint team” that wants to “run” when the season began. Last night, they could check both off on the list with 46 points in the paint and 16 fast break points. It certainly helped that they had the 3-point advantage (eight to five makes over Toronto).
Ultimately, I see two discernible differences in this team over the last couple of weeks – 1) Gerald Henderson is playing the most consistent ball of his career, and 2) Josh McRoberts has infused talent in this lineup. I’d also include the addition of Jannero Pargo, but remember that Ramon Sessions provided comparable production when healthy, and if he weren’t hurt, the team would not have signed Pargo.
Looking ahead to Saturday night’s game, we see another sub .500 Eastern Conference team coming into Time Warner Cable Arena® - the Detroit Pistons. Could this be a sweep of the three-game home stand?! Charlotte’s already won in Detroit this season. Then, a night after that game, could the Bobcats beat the Heat in Miami, ending what may still be an active winning streak hitting 25 games? Wouldn’t that be something?
