Hornets to Pick 9th, 24th and 45th in 2014 NBA Draft
Team Gets 9th Pick From Detroit Pistons and 24th Selection From Portland Trail Blazers
May 20, 2014 – The Charlotte Hornets will have the ninth and 24th selections in the first round, as well as the 45th overall pick in the second round, at the 2014 NBA Draft, which will be held Thursday, June 26 at Barclays Center in Brooklyn, NY.
The Hornets receive the ninth pick from the Detroit Pistons to complete a 2012 trade in which they acquired Ben Gordon and a future first-round pick from the Pistons in exchange for Corey Maggette. The team gets the 24th pick from the Portland Trail Blazers to complete a 2011 trade in which it acquired Dante Cunningham, Sean Marks, Joel Przybilla and two future first-round picks from the Trail Blazers in exchange for Gerald Wallace.
The Hornets’ own pick, No. 16 overall, goes to the Chicago Bulls to complete a 2010 trade in which they acquired Tyrus Thomas from the Bulls in exchange for Acie Law, Ronald “Flip” Murray and a future first-round pick.
This marks the second time in four years that the Hornets have had the ninth pick. The team selected guard Kemba Walker with the ninth overall pick in 2011. Additional players selected with the ninth pick in recent years include 2014 NBA All-Stars Dirk Nowitzki (1998), Joakim Noah (2007) and DeMar DeRozan (2009), as well as 2014 BBVA Rising Stars Challenge MVP Andre Drummond (2012).
Notable players selected with the 24th pick in recent years include Derek Fisher (1996), Andrei Kirilenko (1999), Kyle Lowry (2006) and Serge Ibaka (2008).
Notable players selected with the 45th pick in recent years include Matt Barnes (2002), Matt Bonner (2003), Louis Williams (2005) and 2013-14 NBA Most Improved Player Goran Dragic (2008).
Over the past five NBA Drafts, the Hornets used their first round lottery selections on guards Gerald Henderson (12th overall, 2009) and Kemba Walker (ninth overall, 2011) and forwards Michael Kidd-Gilchrist (second overall, 2012) and Cody Zeller (fourth overall, 2013), while also trading for the draft rights to forward Bismack Biyombo (seventh overall, 2011). The team did not have a pick in 2010.
