Doing the Right Thing

Fred Whitfield, President and COO of the Charlotte Bobcats, invited Charlotte Mecklenburg’s Do the Right Thing to host their celebration on January 23 at Time Warner Cable Arena®. Ten children received honors for making the right decisions and for displaying self-sacrificing attitudes and behaviors.
Do the Right Thing is a program that partners Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools, the Charlotte Fire Department and the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department to recognize and reward children who are nominated for charitable acts and attitudes. This non-profit awards kids three times a year.
“We want to teach children how to respond in time of adversary, when they witness something that is not right,” Charlotte Deputy Fire Chief, Rob Kinniburgh. “We hear too much about the negative… we want to highlight the positive. All these kids tonight and all the recipients through the years have done wonderful things for their community, their school and their family.”
Children were nominated by teachers, friends, or family members and each honoree received a plaque, a certificate and a backpack with supplies to help them through the rest of the school year.
Charlotte Police Captain, Brian Cunningham, led the award ceremony. Also in attendance from the Charlotte Fire Department, Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department and the Charlotte Police Department were Deputy Fire Chief, Rob Kinniburgh, Police Chief, Rodney Monroe, CMS Superintendent, Dr. Heath Morrison.
