Each February for the foreseeable future, it’s probably not much of a stretch to expect to see Chris Paul in the NBA All-Star Game, where he’s appeared the past two years. Every April, expect to read CP3’s name near the top of the NBA’s season-ending assist leaders, where he’s been since his Rookie of the Year campaign in 2005-06.
Just as Paul has become accustomed to an annual All-Star berth and a spot among the NBA’s premier passers in those months, he’s also established a new December tradition: visiting the Toys ‘R’ Us store in the suburb of Metairie, to provide local youngsters with $100 shopping sprees.
For the third straight year, on Monday, Dec. 7, the 6-foot point guard personally escorted children through the aisles of the store, helping them pick out holiday gifts. Paul was joined at the Toys ‘R’ Us by Hornets teammates David West and Hilton Armstrong.
“When you guys are going around the store looking for things, don’t just think about yourself,” Paul told the group of 100 kids. “Think about friends you have, and your brothers and sisters. Christmas is all about giving. It’s not always about getting toys. Get something for the people you know, so that everyone can have a merry Christmas.”
“This is more and more fun every year for us to do,” Paul said after the event. “I don’t care who you are, every kid knows what Christmas is about. Every kid expects Santa to come down and give them a gift. But everyone is not as fortunate as other kids might be. This is our way of giving back, so that these kids will have a better Christmas.”
