New Orleans Hornets center Sean Marks handed out gift cards worth $100 apiece to students with perfect attendance at Mary D. Coghill School on Monday afternoon as part of a joint effort between the Hornets and The Salvation Army to encourage children to attend school.
Marks and Hornets TV analyst Gil McGregor, along with The Salvation Army Captain Ethan Frizzell rewarded the students who had not missed a day as part of the launch to the Emerge program, which provides incentives to sixth, seventh and eighth grade Recovery School District students.
Approximately 97 percent of the sixth, seventh and eighth grade students at Mary D. Coghill have perfect attendance thus far. The $100 gift card is to Wal-Mart and is courtesy of The Salvation Army and New Orleans Hornets.
“One-hundred percent attendance is what it’s all about,” Marks said. “Whether you’re at school, in college, at your job or playing with the Hornets, you’ve got to be there 100 percent of the time. We do anything we can do to give back. The organization does so much for the community; you can never do enough, but spending time with these kids in these schools is important.”
Frizzell is excited to hand out more gift cards the rest of this week. The Hornets and The Salvation Army will provide monthly rewards to students who reach their benchmarks such as gift cards, free admissions to Hornets pep rallies and an invitation to a Christmas party.
“The beautiful thing about this is that it is rewarding right behavior to children,” Frizzell said. “By celebrating the children who are attending school like this with the Hornets, it gets the kids excited and we want that to be the culture of New Orleans.”
