The Hornets partnered with Cory, Tucker and Larrowe, Inc. to dedicate a new community resource center at the James Weldon Johnson Elementary school.
The Hornets organization, the Honeybees, Cox Sports Television play-by-play broadcaster Bob Licht and Head Coach Jeff Bower were on hand to help dedicate the center. Other city leaders were at the dedication as well, including Tillmen Hardy, President of Pension Town of Carrolton Neighborhood Association, Jean Fisher of Carrolton United, Reverend Roosevelt Malone Junior, Pastor of Morning Star Baptist Church, Reverend Donald Boutte, Pastor of Saint John Baptist Church, Jerry Speir, President of Carrolton Riverbend Neighborhood Association, David White, Chairman representative of RHINO/Saint Charles Avenue Presbyterian Church, and Reverend Oliver Durveney, Pastor of Greater Saint John Missionary Baptist Church.
After a rousing school chant led by principal Wanda Brooks, 50 students were awarded two tickets to a future Hornets game as a reward for positive behavior.
Said President of Cory, Tucker and Larrowe, Inc., Steve Cory, “We care and want you to be successful. Hopefully, this resource center is the first step in that.”
The resource center includes brand-new computers, a conference table and new appliances, including a refrigerator, washer and dryer and stove. The center will serve as a tool for teachers to hold lessons and conferences and will also be open to parents and other members of the community. Students will be able to participate in after-school programs and mentoring sessions in the center, as well.
While addressing the students, Hornets Head Coach Jeff Bower said, “the best potential of me is we. My challenge to each and every one of you is to use this room and find one thing that can help you become a better student, classmate and teammate.
“It’s amazing the doors that can be opened with one idea,” Bower said. “Hopefully, this will be a place where kids can come and find ideas and look toward their future.”
