The Hornets teamed up with West Coast Customs Coach, the world’s premier custom car shop, to debut the new Bookmobile presented by Best Western and Sunshine Pages at a recent ceremony at the Alario Center. More than 50 Jr. Hornets Kids Club members were in attendance as Rebirth Brass Band entertained the crowd and Hornets All-Star guard Chris Paul stepped off the brand new bus for the first time.

The outside of the bus is wrapped with Hornets and Bookmobile graphics while the inside includes a new basketball court flooring, a 46" LCD screen with DVD capabilities, new bookshelves and cabinets, four basketball seats and a surround sound system.

“It’s nice, it’s a lot bigger which means you can fit a lot more kids and more books,” said Paul. “West Coast Customs hooked that up. An interesting part of the bus is the Hornets player elements—they have Emeka’s shoes and Peja’s shoes and a lot of the kids like to measure themselves up against those giants.”

Paul invited the kids in attendance to join him on the new Bookmobile and read his children’s book Long Shot: Never Too Small to Dream Big to the group.

In the past three seasons, the Bookmobile has given out more than 155,000 free books to local students and made nearly 450 appearances throughout the region with the help of Best Western and the Sunshine Pages.

“Reading is so important, it’s the foundation of learning,” said Hornets President Hugh Weber. “Part of our mission is to leave a legacy in this community. This community is part of our DNA, and having a vehicle like this that kids think is cool and can associate reading with something that is fun is great.”
