By: Brittany Cranston, Hornets.com

The Hornets hosted 1,500 Recovery School District students at the Monday, Jan. 18 Martin Luther King, Jr. Day home game against the San Antonio Spurs. These students were part of the Most Valuable Pupils (MVP) program presented by Chevron and Richard’s Disposal which rewards 6th-8th grade RSD students for good behavior and reaching benchmark scores and also provides over $5,000 in scholarships for participating in an essay and art contest.

“We are excited to reward these MVP students for their hard work and character in the classroom,” said Hornets President Hugh Weber. “Through our partnerships with Chevron and Richard’s Disposal, we are educating today’s youth about the importance of setting and reaching goals and rewarding those who display passion, purpose and pride at school.”

The MVP students each received a ticket to the game, a Hornets “MVP” T-shirt, a Hornets drawstring bag with a workbook, lunch at the arena, in-arena recognition throughout the game and interaction with Hornets players. Different interactive activities and contests throughout the game encouraged and helped the students complete the workbook assignments.

“At Chevron, we believe that education is an important factor in the economic growth and well-being of the communities in which we work,” says Chevron’s Gulf of Mexico Business Unit Vice President Warner Williams. “By investing in education with the Recovery School District, we are helping students pursue their dreams and use their talents to enrich where they call home.”

“We are proud to be affiliated with outstanding organizations like the Hornets and Chevron,” said Alvin Richard, founder of Richard’s Disposal. “We are excited to support students in the Recovery School District with the MVP program and allow them to pursue a bright future here in our wonderful city of New Orleans.”
