One hundred and fifty students ages 6 to 12 partnered with Hornets and Sting players, coaches and broadcasters to tip off the NBA's Read To Achieve Week on Thursday, October 25 at the Siskey YMCA in Matthews.

Led by Hornets Head Coach Paul Silas, Charlotte's All-Star Reading Team consists of Jamal Mashburn, Baron Davis, David Wesley, Kirk Haston, Sting Head Coach Anne Donovan and Sting player Charlotte Smith.

As part of the overall Read To Achieve program, there will be monthly Reading Timeouts at area YMCA's in which All-Star Reading Team members will participate. In addition, the Hornets will recognize one reader at every home game in conjunction with the Public Library System.

The Hornets will also continue their long-standing Books and Bugs Reading incentive program in partnership with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg School System, the Adult Literacy program in partnership with Central Piedmont Community College and the Tryon Hills Pre-School Reading Incentive program. The All-Star Reading Team will be featured in public service announcements to be aired locally to promote the importance of reading.

The NBA's Read to Achieve program is a year-round reading incentive program for kids promoting the value of educational, recreational and online reading, as well as encouraging families to spend quality time reading and talking together. The NBA initiative is the most extensive educational outreach program in the history of professional sports. It includes the annual donation of more than 200,000 books and the creation of Reading and Learning Centers in schools and community-based organizations throughout the United States.
