During the 2007-08 NBA season, the Hornets established several New Orleans-era franchise records for attendance, highlighted by a total of 20 sellouts, including all seven playoff home games. On Tuesday, Dec. 16, the team broke another attendance mark, albeit one that may not generate as much publicity and national attention.

The Hornets’ annual holiday luncheon served over 2,000 senior citizens, roughly twice as many as several of the past senior December get-togethers. The huge crowd packed about 300 tables at Westwego’s Alario Center, which is also home of the team’s practice facility. Many of the seniors arrived at the Alario Center in groups that took buses to the event.

“This event is a great way for our seniors to fellowship with one another and enjoy a meal,” said Fifth African Baptist Church deacon James David Jones, who attended the event along with about 40 members of his congregation. “And a lot of the people who came with us today are big Hornets fans who follow the team closely.”

Jones and his fellow church members were served traditional holiday meal by over 100 Hornets employees. The seniors were also treated to special holiday-themed performances by the Honeybees dance team, Hugo the Hornet and – last not but not least – the Used to Bees senior dance team.
