On Wednesday, the 22-year-old announced that he is donating $10,000 to New Orleans’ Girls and Boys Town, an organization that operates two emergency shelters and family-style group homes in the New Orleans area. The sizable contribution will allow 11 youngsters who have been neglected, abandoned or abused to purchase clothing.
“I want to help out children in New Orleans, and my management gave me a list of a few places (to consider),” Armstrong explained of the reasons for his donation. “This one really stood out. This is a very family-oriented place and faith-based. I really liked that.
“As a teenager growing up, clothes meant a lot to me. When I looked good on the outside, it definitely made me feel good on the inside. I wanted to help these kids feel better about themselves. I want to be a part of kids’ lives and give them someone to look up to. I got to meet a few of the kids who live here, and they are very cool, very disciplined.”
The 6-foot-11 center’s $10,000 gift is part of his plans for contributing to children’s causes in Louisiana this season. Armstrong also is expecting to open a summer basketball camp for youngsters in his hometown of Peekskill, N.Y. in 2008.
“I want to give back to this community and help it rebuild,” the Connecticut product said. “I’m hoping to help out a lot of kids here and do whatever I can. After Hurricane Katrina, people didn’t think the city would come back, but I see that it is a strong city that is fighting back and wants to be even better than it was before (Katrina). I want to be a part of that.”
