As a child growing up in San Antonio, Devin Brown’s family owned Spurs season tickets, so he frequently got to watch All-Stars such as David Robinson and Sean Elliott play in person. Even back then though, Brown realized that many families are unable to afford tickets to games. That’s one reason why the 6-foot-5 guard decided to purchase tickets to Hornets home games this season for New Orleans kids.
“Being in the situation I am blessed to be in now, I definitely want to give back,” Brown explained. “A lot of times families have a lot of things going on, and some might not ever get a chance to go to a game. This is a great way to enable kids to be able to do that.”
On Monday afternoon, Brown met a large group of local children – many of whom will soon get to watch Brown and the Hornets play – during the team’s official tip-off for its 2008-09 Read to Achieve program. Brown read books to several hundred kids from Bethune Elementary School in New Orleans.
The reserve shooting guard was joined by Hornets TV analyst Gil McGregor and Honeybees dance team members Lindsey, Maegan, Saydi and Trista in reading to the kids. The Hornets also invited a group of special guest readers, consisting of two players and a coach apiece representing the men’s basketball teams at local colleges Dillard, Loyola, Xavier and Tulane.
The elementary students were excited to have a Hornets player visit their school, as well as team mascot Hugo the Hornet. The kids cheered when they were told that they’ll be able to attend an upcoming Hornets home game, if they attain specific reading objectives by the end of this week.
Brown, who previously played for the Hornets in 2006-07 when they played six home games in New Orleans, says he has met many older fans over the past month who’ve approached him to discuss their anticipation of the 2008-09 season.
“Whether I’m at Wal-Mart, or at a restaurant, or just walking down the street, that’s happening a lot,” Brown related. “Everybody is really excited about the season getting started. It’s been great getting that feedback from a lot of fans.”
Brown is actually previously familiar with the city of New Orleans and the state of Louisiana. His mother is a Baton Rouge native, so Brown spent many of his childhood summers on vacation there and occasionally visited the Big Easy.
“I already know my way around here pretty well,” Brown said, smiling.
