The Hornets Better Halves collected nearly 2,000 dresses to give to local high school girls at the annual prom dress giveaway on Sunday, March 9. The elegant dresses were donated by members of the Better Halves, fans at Hornets games and local retailers such as Cache and Pearl’s Place.

High school girls lined up beginning at 8:30 a.m. in anticipation of finding that perfect dress. Doors to the event opened at noon to approximately 200 young ladies in line, excited for an afternoon of “shopping” for a beautiful new dress. The Better Halves and other Hornets staff members were on hand to help the girls browse the numerous styles and colors, as well as provide advice for the best look.
One high school senior found the perfect fit with the first dress she selected from the rack.
“My favorite part is the color,” said Jessica Bazanac, Edna Karr High School senior. “Two of my favorite colors to wear are pink and brown. I really like how it fits.”
Shoppers were also treated with raffles that included prizes such as flowers, boutonnieres, a full make-up session and other treats from the salon and spa that would help cover other costs required for the perfect prom night.
“This really means a lot to me,” said Bazanac. “Everyone was really helpful and told me what they liked and what they disliked.”
“These young ladies looked beautiful in their new gowns,” said Lesley West, wife of Hornets forward David West and chairwoman of this year’s event. “We were thrilled to be able provide something as special as a prom dress to each of them.”
The event was such a success that the Better Halves are considering hosting another prom dress giveaway in April.
