July 1, 2014
On June 23, Hornets Sports & Entertainment welcomed me and five other Y Achievers to participate in the Hornets Academy fellowship program. We will work with the following departments to learn more about their day-to-day operations, gain hands-on experience, develop professional skills and be better equipped to embark on our post-high-school career path:
- Human Resources
- Interactive Marketing
- Technical Operations
- Guest Services & Event Staffing
- Box Office
- Corporate Social Responsibility
- Grassroots Marketing
- Team Store
During our first week with Hornets Sports & Entertainment, we met with the Jackie Queen, Manager of Human Resources and Rhonda Curry, Vice President of Human Resources. The Human Resources Department is dedicated to maximizing the potential of Hornets Sports & Entertainment’s greatest asset—its employees. The first day kicked off with orientation, led by Jackie. She reviewed important organizational policies and procedures, provided insight into all of the departments that make up Hornets Sports & Entertainment and took us on a tour. Later in the week, Rhonda led a resume and interview workshop.
We also had the opportunity to have one-on-one sessions with President and Chief Operating Officer Fred Whitfield and Executive Vice President and Chief Sales and Marketing Officer Pete Guelli. Both executives told us about their career path, the responsibilities of the position they hold with Hornets Sports & Entertainment and gave us great advice on how to maximize our potential to be successful academically and professionally.
Manager of Event Presentation Emily Ladd next gave us an overview of her role with Hornets Sports & Entertainment and took us through her plans for the Draft Party. We had a great time at the Court Unveil and Draft Party on June 26.
Week 1 was awesome and we can’t wait to be a part of the interactive marketing and technical operations departments next week.
The Y Achievers fellows have officially taken over the Community Report Blog, so please continue to follow our weekly blog posts about our experience with Hornets Sports & Entertainment.
