Bobcats & FOX Sports to Present College Scholarships
On Saturday, April 26, Bobcats Sports & Entertainment President & COO Fred Whitfield and FOX Sports Carolinas/SportSouth Senior Vice President & General Manager Jeff Genthner will present three $5,000 college scholarships to high school seniors Rachel Bernard (Vance High School), Anjelica Pendergrass (West Charlotte High School) and Jordan Williams (West Charlotte High School) during an on-court presentation at halftime of Game 3 against the Miami Heat.

Each student participates in the Y Achievers program, a YMCA of Greater Charlotte initiative that operates in partnership with Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools. The program helps teens improve academic performance, develop a positive sense of self, build character, explore diverse college and career options and interact with professionals who serve as role models.

Last year, the Bobcats and FOX Sports joined together for a $200,000 sponsorship of Y Achievers. Along with the $200,000 sponsorship, both organizations honored one student each from West Charlotte High School, West Mecklenburg High School and Vance High School with a $5,000 college scholarship to help fund their educational goals after high school. The Bobcats also invited six local high school students who were members of Y Achievers to participate in the Cats Academy Fellowship Program. Two students each from Vance, West Charlotte and West Mecklenburg participated in the six-week fellowship, which was designed to provide insight and experience into the sports and entertainment industry.

The Bobcats are partnering with Susan G. Komen of Charlotte on Saturday, April 26 during Game 3 against the Miami Heat. Registration for the 2014 Komen Race for the Cure begins on May 1. This year’s race will be Saturday, October 4 in Uptown Charlotte. Be sure to visit the Bobcats Community Corner across from section 112 to learn more about the upcoming Komen Race for the Cure.

Today, Komen has invested more than $2.5 billion to fulfill its promise, working to end breast cancer in the U.S. and throughout the world through ground-breaking research, community health outreach, advocacy and programs in more than 30 countries. Since 1982, Komen has played a critical role in every major advance in the fight against breast cancer – transforming how the world talks about and treats this disease and helping to turn millions of breast cancer patients into breast cancer survivors. Komen is proud of its contribution to some real victories:

• More early detection and effective treatment - Currently, about 70 percent of women 40 and older receive regular mammograms, the single most effective screening tool to find breast cancer early. Since 1990, early detection and effective treatment have resulted in a 34 percent decline in breast cancer mortality in the U.S.
• More hope - In 1980, the 5-year relative survival rate for women diagnosed with early stage breast cancer (cancer confined to the breast) was about 74 percent. Today, that number is 99 percent.
• More research - The federal government now devotes more than $850 million each year to breast cancer research, treatment and prevention (compared to $30 million in 1982).
• More survivors - Currently, there are about 3 million breast cancers survivors, the largest group of cancer survivors in the U.S.

Care. Serve. Repeat.
