Bobcats Sports & Entertainment and University of North Carolina Asheville officials announced today that the Charlotte Bobcats will hold their 2012 Training Camp at Kimmel Arena on the campus of UNC Asheville.

“Kimmel Arena is a new, state-of-the-art venue that will be an ideal place for our players and coaches to prepare for the coming season,” said Bobcats President of Basketball Operations Rod Higgins. "We look forward to utilizing all of the various amenities UNC Asheville has to offer, and we thank Coach Biedenbach and Coach Kirkpatrick for opening their facilities to us."

Kimmel Arena, which opened in November 2011, is home to the UNC Asheville Bulldogs men’s and women’s basketball teams. The arena is located in the Wilma M. Sherrill Center and has a capacity of over 3,200 for basketball. The multipurpose facility has hosted over 100,000 guests since its opening, and offers the modern amenities fans, players, and coaches expect, including wide concourses with views of the court, large video boards, intimate and comfortable seating and outstanding training facilities.

“All of us at UNC Asheville are excited to host the 2012 Charlotte Bobcats Training Camp in the Wilma M. Sherrill Center, and we are honored to have such a respected professional basketball program in our Kimmel Arena,” said UNC Asheville Director of Athletics Janet Cone. “Our University has, once again, partnered with the city, county, sports commission, chamber of commerce, corporate partners, and the many passionate basketball fans in our region, to help position Western North Carolina as the premier showcase for all levels of basketball. In addition, we look forward to welcoming the team, coaches, support staff, and fans to our campus and the Greater Asheville area for a week of great sport and enjoyment; the Charlotte Bobcats will become yet another reason for people of all ages to consider Asheville a destination of choice for years to come.”

This will mark the sixth time in the last eight years that the Bobcats have conducted training camp away from Charlotte. The team previously held camp at UNC Wilmington from 2005-08 and in 2010.

“As we continue to position the Bobcats as a team for all the Carolinas, we look forward to making our first trip to Asheville,” said Bobcats Sports & Entertainment President & COO Fred Whitfield. “We are excited about our new relationship with UNC Asheville and about bringing our team to our fans in the western portion of the state.”
