First Look: Air Jordan XX9

Moving away from their long-running model of introducing the latest iteration of its flagship Air Jordan model in February around All-Star, Jordan Brand will launch the shoe in September. Yesterday they introduced the XX9 to the world, showing off the two revolutionary technologies that will eventually change the Jordan line.

Once again, the Air Jordan XX9 was designed by the legendary Tinker Hatfield, Nike's vice president of creative concepts. According to Hatfield, the XX9 takes the biggest technological leap in terms of performance since the XI (which he also designed).

The first and most noticeable innovation is the woven upper. Not to confused with Nike's Flyknit or engineered mesh in previous Nike footwear, this new process takes it another notch further, allowing for targeted zones of thread count for added stability (lesser for the areas that require more flex). The woven upper is manufactured in Italy with special weaving machines that allow for really fine patterns and graphics to be woven into the upper. The analogy that was used was comparing it to pixels on a display, the this fine woven process allows for more "pixels" on the upper, making for a "higher definition" finished product. Underneath the woven upper is the Flight Web system, panels and webbed straps that wrap the foot and integrate with the laces, giving the shoe structure and lockdown. Together, the upper gives the wearer a sock-like fit that feels customized to the foot.

The other performance upgrade is the new Flight Plate, an upgrade to the previous one that was well received on the XX8. The evolved Flight Plate syncs up the responsiveness of the forefoot Zoom Air units with a Pebax moderstor plate that bridges the transition from heel to forefoot.

No official word was made on whether we'll see the XX9 on court on Jordan athletes during the playoffs, but judging by this teaser spot released earlier by Jordan, you can expect them on Russell Westbrook's feet at some point during the postseason.

The Air Jordan XX9 will drop sometime in September in the two launch colorways--black/white/gym red and black/team orange/dark grey. Price to be announced.
