The Rockets are making a splash-landing in the early 70's as the team honors its first season in Houston by wearing the 1971-72 road red uniforms against the L.A. Lakers on Sunday, Feb. 6 on ABC (3:30 p.m. ET). The Rockets are wearing the uniforms occasionally this season, taking part in NBA Hardwood Classics Nights.

Take a look back at some of the uniforms the Rockets players have worn since the team's early days in the NBA as the San Diego Rockets.

So Long So-Cal
The Rockets began play in the NBA in San Diego during the 1967-68 season, their nickname reflecting the growth of the space-age industries in the city. San Diego drafted Rudy Tomjanovich with the second overall pick of the 1970 NBA Draft and selected Calvin Murphy with the first pick in the second round that year.

Houston, We Have Liftoff
A group of Texas investors bought the Rockets franchise in 1971 and moved the team to Houston. The club would adopt the now-familiar red and gold. Over an 11-year NBA playing career, Rudy Tomjanovich, who spent 34 years in the Rockets organization as a player and coach, averaged 13.8 points and 5.1 rebounds, leading the club in scoring four times.

If It Ain't Broke ...
A subtle change was made in 1972, as the Rockets switched to slanted, flat white lettering on the jerseys and added the team's new logo to the right leg of the shorts. This design would last through the second Championship won by Hakeem Olajuwon and Co. in 1995.

Out With the (G)old
The Rockets made a major change following the 1994-95 Championship season, switching the team's colors to red and blue and adding pinstripes to their uniforms. Charles Barkley wore the new cartoon-like Rockets logo on his jersey during his four seasons in Houston.

A Big Statement
In 2002, the Rockets selected China's Yao Ming with the No. 1 overall pick, to team with guard Steve Francis. The following year, Houston dropped blue from the team's official colors and redesigned its uniforms. The club would again wear white at home and red on the road.
