Julius Erving's dazzling dunks and drives rewarded the fans, who had made the Philadelphia forward the top vote-getter for the midseason classic. Erving scored a game-high 25 points in leading the East to a 132-123 victory over the West, its fourth in a row.

Erving's MVP exploits at the Great Western Forum overshadowed the stellar efforts of Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and Magic Johnson of the host Los Angeles Lakers. Abdul-Jabbar scored 20 points on 9-for-12 shooting from the floor to pace the West, while Johnson posted a then-All-Star-record 16 assists.

But it was Erving's day, as "the Doc" led the East to a 42-point first quarter and made his coach, Billy Cunningham, a winning All-Star coach for the fourth time.
